NERDRAGE: Developers shoving their quirky controll schemes down our throats - by henke

Are you using a trackball or laptop touchpad? Because if you have an actual mouse with no wheel, then you need to buy a new one, stat. It probably doesn't have five buttons, either. Just yuck.
And you can zoom in/out in Fallout 3's maps with Page Up and Page Down.

I may be using a five year old work laptop, but FFS even I use a mouse wheel. I can kinda see having without one, but flat out refusing to ever touch one is pretty out there.
Actually these days I'm pretty sure you can't even buy a new (normal) mouse without a wheel. You can't begrudge shooters for including features bound to a what is an almost universal function now.

You're complaining about Crysis having "quirky control schemes" ? It's one of the rare games designed to be played with a keyboard and mouse and probably the last one you'll ever see. How about complaining about games that are actually guilty of this, like, oh I dunno, 99% of the games released on the PC in the last 5 years for example (including Farcry 2).
But it's a bit late to complain about games having poor controls on the PC to be honest. If you had posted that 5 years ago, I'd be with you, but today ? Developpers gave up on keyboard and mouse controls a long time ago. If you want good controls, buy a controller, or better yet play the games on their original platform (the 360).

THAT'S what you nerdrage about? If I raged as easily as you I'd died of a heart attack five years ago(no doubt to the joy of many). I don't even remember that feature in Crysis because it takes you five goddamn minutes to get used to it, just like it takes five minutes to get used to toggle crouch.

I hate it when developers assume everybody has a scroll wheel on their mouse. I don't have one, and I will never get one. The end. Why oh why are so many scroll functions in so many games hard bound to the scroll wheel.
Incidentally, I could complain about same thing
because I have mouse wheel. Especially FPSes love to use the mouse wheel to scroll through weapons and in nine out of ten cases it can't be changed in the menu or even the config files(hello, STALKER). As I use mouse3 to aim/zoom you can probably guess where I'm going with this.

Thanks Malleus and NV. I will check those things out!

Because I haven't had any troubles with any other PC games recently. Granted, I've played many of them using my 360 controller.

I wasn't playing many PC games 5 years ago. Did I miss my window of opportunity for bitching about controls in PC games!? :o

It takes a bit more than 5 minutes for me. And it's not like I only play 1 game at a time either. What happens when I switch over to some other FPS that has "hold" iron sights after I've gotten used to Crysis "toggle" iron sights? Forcing the player get used to one system when it's the same exact goddamn function as in a dozen other games is fucked up and well worth of nerdraging about.

Are you kidding me? Noone nerdrages as easily as you do. You're even nerdraging about my nerdrage.

There was some tactical shooter demo a played a while back that had a pretty cool aim toggle system: If you held RMB, you would be in iron sights until releasing RMB. But if you just tapped RMB, it would act as a toggle. Took a minute to get used to, but it worked pretty nicely. Maybe it was a Ghost Recon game?

I generally dislike using mouse3 for this exact reason. Sometimes I'll just rebind whatever control is there to mouse4 or mouse5 so I can avoid accidentally scrolling the wheel to change weapons.
The funny thing is, I practically never use the wheel for actual scrolling. Strange that it never occurred to me to just disable that functionality in games where I want to use the mouse wheel button.

I use a Logitech Marblemouse trackball. It has 2 big and 2 small buttons.
(
http://www.logitech.com/en-hk/mice_pointers/trackballs/devices/156)
I like it. I used them since 1999. I haven't found a better trackball.
I like the trackball, because it doesn't put any strain on my wrist, elbow or shoulder. I only use 3 fingers to move the ball. I am right-handed, but I always prefered to use my left hand for the mouse/trackball. Ever since I sat behind my first computer with a mouse, which was a DecStation in 1989. With the mouse in your left hand, you have a good hand free for writing, taking the telephone, etc. Most mice are not symmetrical and can't be used in the left hand. The Marble Mouse is perfectly symmetrical. It's optical, pretty precise, kinda programmable, easy to clean, and hardly ever breaks.
I like it. I'm not gonna switch to a mouse because some game developer wants me to.
Also, I've used a trackball for gaming since 1999. In combination with a (
http://www.chproducts.com/retail/j_fighter_usb.html) joystick. As I've explained on TTLG before, I don't mind that my aim is slightly worse than it would be with a mouse in my right hand. I don't play FPS games online anymore, so who cares. My current joystick has 20 buttons and a shift function. And is highly programmable. Except that it can't emulate wheelup and wheeldown. The combination trackball+joystick gives me 42 buttons that I can push while moving (don't need to take my fingers off WASD). I never have to replace my mouse during circle strafing. I can play for a full day without getting tired in my mouse-hand.

Thanks !
That is exactly what I wanted to know. I couldn't find this info via google. The fact that this function isn't changable via the menus made me fear the worst. In Aion there was no way to change zoom either. But for Aion I downloaded a small application (called Marble Mouse Scroll Wheel) that would emulate mouse scrolling. Works in other games too. But not in Fallout.
Still, developers should allow people to change all keyboard and mouse function via a menu. I don't care if it's hidden down inside 3 sub-sub-sub-menus. As long as I can change it. Some games (like several MMORPGs) use Mouse1 and Mouse2 for fixed things. And sometimes you can't change those functions. Rotate view, rotate camera, etc. I hate that.

Nobody ever does. I don't even know why they keep putting it in. It's probably a console thing.
Eldron on 21/6/2010 at 11:45
goddamn console scrollwheels.
But the whole point of this thread seemed to be the rage against something that is different from what one is used to, even the smallest things.
One thing humans are quite good at is adapting to the situation, this includes control schemes. But sure, in all tha rage the only time you'll be wasting is your own, when you could've just said "oh well" and enjoyed the game, actually, I can honestly say I havent thought much of how controlschemes have worked in different games, switching hasn't been an issue either.
