Isn't a response to a needless post also, by its very definition, needless?
No. For example, if someone yells "Fire!" in a crowded movie house that is in fact not on fire. The initial statement was indeed needless, but it nevertheless creates a condition which requires a response. Like, "Calm down everyone, the theater isn't on fire, and let's beat the crap out of the guy who said it was so he'll learn not to do that anymore."

Well, fuck. This thread went all over the place and right down the crapper.
henke, if you think Crysis had a weird control scheme, you've obviously not played some of the more retarded console ports on a keyboard. MGS2 and RE4 with their default controls, oh my god.
And whatever would you think if you played SS1 today and it was your first time? Like people said: adapt, hombre! :D

Surprised no-one's mentioned Gothic yet.

My theory: most console players would prefer toggle crouch because it is tough to hold crouch when it is the left thumb stick (and still move around with it).
So, just like smaller world sizes, longer load times, and muddier textures, this is something else PC gamers will have to adapt to as developers these days primarily target consoles.
I mean, it is *so tough* to recode the controls to make another sale, just like it would have been so tough to merge multiple small levels together to eliminate load times in DX2/Thief3/Unreal2.

I think crouch/iron sights should always be toggleable. In any game that gives you the choice of toggling/holding-a-button I always go for the toggle option.

Hell, even the severely gimped at PC port of Modern Warfare 2 at least gave you the choice of toggle or hold options for ADS, crouch and prone. Still doesn't make the terrible Multiplayer component worth playing. Unbalanced rubbish designed for people who can't aim and literally encourages camping with insta-kill rewards.
Bad Company 2 is an infinitely superior game, with better optimised port implementation wise (dedicated servers, a server browser, adjustable FOV, DX10/11 support + exclusive graphical options), but even with that you're stuck with toggle ADS and hold crouch. They're planning to remedy this in the upcoming patch, but that bloody thing has been delayed by two months because some fucking micro-transaction reskins (cosmetic only) didn't work. Christ, out of all the reasons to delay a patch, it something as stupid as that? Meanwhile knife hitboxes are still broken, hits only register if you stab someone from the front.

oddly enough I prefer crouch hold and ironsight toggle instead of all toggle/all hold

And I prefer holdable. Ergo the need for
options.
