Sounds like they're trying to do the same thing with Sonic that Nintendo did with New SMB. Could work, if they do it right.
It should be noted, however, that I have not played New SMB, so I don't know if it worked for Nintendo or not.

Good thing that it's confirmed to have "HD graphics", automatically ruling any chance of this being an exclusive to a non-entity Nintendo system.
