Hello!
I wanted to ask what does it mean if mission is re-released for New Dark and what are the differences?
What are potential consequences of playing old FMs in updated engine, since some missions were not re-released?
Easier mantling, so i can get to previously-non-reachable-places?
So far, i played a few early T1 FMs which i think weren't 'optimized' for New Dark and didn't have any problems.
Now i am playing Calendra's Cistern (old one) and i just realized it was re-released for New Dark.
Should i switch to new one?
Best thing to do is probably play them both, just to see the difference :))

Exactly. But that leads to problems only in very rare situations. And in most cases you'll see that you're getting somewhere you do not belong. Black void, pink textures, and pieces of architecture flying in the air. That kind of cool stuff. It is mostly fun.

So far i only managed to get to some 'forbidden' rooftops, and 'foot steps' audio was not playing while walking on those surfaces.
Otherwise i didn't notice anything strange.

There are some very few FMs that have something broken in NewDark, though few of them are critical and as far as I know, most of them already have fixes available from the folks here.
Other than that, the main difference is only reaching certain areas not meant to be accessible thanks to newmantle. This is mostly nothing to be concerned about, but keep in mind that Garrett might get stuck in some of these areas and/or you might be able to reach certain areas of an FM prematurely.

Most of the fixes we have made with dml’s are down to either author errors or due to the fact with very much more powerful computers with better graphic cards objects that were not placed precisely initially can nowadays become glaringly misplaced or become stuck in some other way.
We do try to fix as many Newmantle issues as possible but usually only fix the most obvious ones and likely or not miss many others, but there is an aspect of Newdark that causes serious bugs, Darkloader was a very clever bit of kit, so much so it almost seemed to have its own individual thought in the way it appeared to know what an authors intention was even if the author had made an error in Dromed instructions, but Newdark is absolute in reading Dromed instructions, make even the most minor error and Newdark might reject those instructions (garbage in, garbage out).
This means that sometimes objectives, secrets, scripts etc that used to work when playing via Olddark no longer work when playing via Newdark.
I use the word Darkloader loosely above because other factors may also be the cause of these differences in the ability to interpret Dromed instructions including the fact that Darkloader loaded missions into a temporary folder whereas Newdark loads the mission directly onto your comp HD, also improved scripts, T2Fix instead of Tafferpatch etc, either way the difference between computers 20 years ago and the software used to run games is very very different to what we are used to today.
To see the real difference between Olddark and Newdark try playing a mission using Olddark, the controls and mantling ability is an absolute nightmare in comparison, how people got into Thief in the days before Newdark is beyond my comprehension. :cheeky:

Thanks for the reply, that is very informative!
As for the quoted part, all i can say is that the call of the shadows was a strong one, even in all it's pixelated 640x480 glory :)
Same as now, the ambiance was so gripping, that nothing else matters.
You just want to put your hood on, stay in the shadows of those cobbelstoned streets and say to yourself 'it's time to begin'.
