http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2777/0001cg4.jpgI found this when looking at thief files. It all started yesterday evening when I was trying to get music from old games like heretic and hexen, and I was using a program called XWE (eXtendable Wad Editor). Well, the program doesn't just open .wad files. It opens other stuff too. So, I was checking out thief (since the website for the program said it supports thief) and saw the .RES files in thief gold. I was curious, so I decided to try opening one. Low and behold, I opened up editor.res and found that picture. As you can see, it looks rather corrupted. This is how it looked. I even tried loading palettes from thief onto it, but it did not work. What is fascinating about the photo is that it appears to be an image for system shock 2, judging by the panel on the wall behind the robots. Also, the very fact that it has robots shows that it wasn't for thief.:laff: It appears that all three games, Thief, Thief 2, and System Shock 2 have the same editor.res with this strange image. The image was called 001.bmp.
Tip: If you want to see the picture for yourself, download XWE and open editor.res with it.;)

Heh. Cool, sNeaksie! Thanks for sharing!
I wonder how many SS2 bits are in there?
(The motion data doesn't count! The same guy, Jonathon Conant, did motion capture for both games, and of course the teams shared data.)
There's the proto03 skin in the TMA demo folder, too, and Randy Smith had them running around in the Bank mission at one point, as a placeholder, until the Mechanist bots were ready.

:wot: Very interesting.

Hmm, nice!
Yeah, I've noticed some rather interesting stuff left all over the thief files, both Gold and TMA.;)
I also discovered a folder in the fam.crf called "tgtest" which has some nice brick textures. I am not sure if those are being used or not. They seem fairly high quality, and I don't remember if I've seen them before.:erg:

Is that image found elsewhere, without the reduced palette, as say, a promotional shot, or is it unique?
sNeaksieGarrett on 12/12/2008 at 03:15
Afaik, that is the only version of that screenshot. I did not search extensively through the files though; but in all my browsings of thief, i never saw anything like it.
jtr7 on 12/12/2008 at 03:19
Well, it's certainly new to me, too.:p Say, it reminds me of the slideshow images that cycle while the games are installing. They have a pretty low palette and that kind of dithering.:sly:

Hmm, I wonder where those are stored.....:p
Oh, and that face on the robot looks like a pickaxe or whatever it is called. (pick?)
Oh, and I posted this on my blog, which btw, is now linked to via my website on the "menu bar" frame.
jtr7 on 12/12/2008 at 03:48
Yeah, a pick, in this case. A little bit o' Boba Fett "T" visor.

Hmm,
It seems that there is "SEC" written on the main guy´s chest and hands.
SEC for Security ?
They are guards in high-tech suits ?
But their gloves only has... 3 fingers ?!?
