@Esme - I think they're talking about an upgrade that would give you the abiltiy to shoot the mites and cornerstones in the first place.
It's been a while since I played TDS, and I don't think I ever did the side quest in the first place, but according to the Thief Wikia, you had to get either a Hammer or Pagan blessing to gain the ability to shoot the Rust Mites and Pagan Cornerstones. So in actuality, it doesn't sound like an actual equipment (bow) upgrade at all.
Nope no upgrade there either, you use a broadhead to kill a rust mite which then explodes noisily bringing all the AI within earshot and the cornerstones needed a moss arrow but were a lot quieter, all standard kit, no upgrades required.
You may have found out about these as a result of the "get the factions on your side" side quests, the shooting moss arrows through pagan shrines & burning or planting the pagan tree, can't remember the others, I remember it's possible to do enough for each faction to get them both on your side, but these were quests carried out in the city hub using standard equipment, there isn't a bow upgrade in DS, the only upgrade I can think of are the climbing gloves, apart from those you finish with the same toolset you started with.
Different munitions become available as you progress through the game and sections of the hub become open but if they are counted as upgrades then we've had upgrades since Dark Project.

Nope, you need some blessing from the hammers before you can kill them. Same with the pagan corners. (

I stand corrected, it's an upgrade to your arrows obtained after reading dylan (who says they are enchanting the bow) & drepts (who grants the builders blessing on your arrows) notes, so arguably a new munition type.
It's still not a bow upgrade imo, the bow doesn't shoot further or faster or more accurately, it just adds a capability to the arrows like a font temporarily did to water arrows in Dark Project, again if we count this as a bow upgrade then we've always had a bow upgrade.

It allows you to do something you couldn't do and it even says "Bow Upgraded" on screen. It's an upgrade.
If you have a car with no air con and you get it put in I'm pretty sure that counts as an upgrade. Does it make the car faster, handle better or have better braking? No.
This is besides the point though. The new upgrades will likely be to power, accuracy etc. So what?

There aren't any scenes with dogs putting their paws over their eyes. I can't stress how important that is. It has been established as something that works, so it should be in every single movie.

What about the blackjack upgrade in Deadly Shadows? And also the stealth sword upgrade in The Dark Project?

Argue it any way you want, the upgrades are a clear substitution of character skill for player skill -- when you missed a shot in TDP or TMA, it wasn't because your bow was inaccurate.
SubJeff on 6/2/2014 at 16:10
That really depends what the upgrades do. If they let you fire further thats not really an upgrade to character skill, and arguably it means you have to use more player skill as the arc of the shot will be different at greater distance, as will the time to target and the amount you have to lead.
In an an ideal world.
I'm sure the arrows here are like lasers.

The quality of the bow you're using is a pretty big factor in accuracy for archery. You can't just get a twig and put a bowstring on it and be Legolas. Bow quality is a thing that can be upgraded to improve both power and accuracy, in real life. Stop acting like it's completely unheard of for a bow to be better than another bow.
If you wanted to argue about the aiming system not requiring the player to compensate for distance or motion, that's one thing, and I'd even agree with you on that, but the fact that you can improve your bow is not exactly unrealistic, nor does it really have much to do with player skill vs character skill.
