Maybe not. Expert in Thief is unlike any other equivalent Expert in other "Standard FPS games". Expert in Thief opens up new areas in the levels, re-organizes/adds loot and content for a more challenging gameplay, removes parts of your inventory, makes you extremely vulnerable and adds additional objectives (difficult) and requirements.
I would start on Normal on my first playthrough if I were you. If you're still learning the ropes and tricks of the trade, Normal can be challenging and it never gets easy. Besides, if you make it on normal, you will have a reason to replay the game on a harder difficulty to see what you missed.

This explains many of the ways in which Thief is superior to modern AAA games:

You know, I was just thinking about this video, and I feel that being powerful was a part of Thief's appeal too. Sure, making Garrett feel like a person with some limits, like clumsy jumping and bad swordfighting, was a huge part of the appeal. But Garrett can overcome his enemies if he knows to judiciously use his resources. I mean, I find that there are few things as satisfying as flash bombing and knocking out four guards or so in a room without being spotted. Same with taking out a cluster of guards or some trickily positioned guards with a gas arrow. Of course, both these items are limited for these reasons, and they aren't the same as modern day games giving a lot of easy disposal choices to make the player feel powerful, but there were ways Thief made you feel powerful. I think those ways are just as important as the moments where Thief made you feel tense.

I agree completely with that. The thing is, as you suggested, that those moments of feeling powerful were still framed within the context of the character of Garrett, and within the design of the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I occasionally break out my Hammerite Deathmatch FM to blow off steam (using the secret massively overpowered weapon always), but... that's not Thief.
