If you want to use one of the new 91.xx version nVidia driver, Thief 1,Gold and Thief 2 will not work. We had the same problem anno with the 5x.xx versions of nVidia drivers. This is not a bug, this is a compatibility issue.
To solve this:
For Thief 1-Gold use the Nvidia Driver 5x.xx Fixes from here:
(
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/patches/)
For Thief 2 you must edit the user.cfg file with a notepad and remove the semicolon from the
"safe_texture_manager" line.

Thanks a lot, very helpful information

Doesn't the problem apply to every driver version released since 5x.xx? Or did it go away and then come back again with the 91.xx series?
Anyway, it's worth noting that it also matters which card you use. I can run the games fine on a Geforce4 with the latest drivers, without needing the fixes or the safe_texture_manager tweak.

fun! i recently installed them for HL2E1. thanks for the heads-up; i'll make a note of this when i do my yearly series playthrough in a couple of months.

It did work with the 7x and 8x series of drivers. Hope they'll fix it again in one of the upcomings releases

Well if they don't fix they horrible transparency bugs under whatever version of DirectX Thief uses, they've lost me to ATI. All missions use transparency, only a few use fog. That's a tradeoff I'm willing to make.

Hmmm, well I haven't played Thief in a little while now; being busy playing SS2 again, and Ponterbee Station, and also Anarchy Online and Hitman.
But I had a crap of a time getting SS2 to run on my Nvidia 84.25 drivers (to which I had upgraded from something older so that Oblivion would play correctly). This is on a Geforce 6600GT on an AMD MB running XP Pro.
Problem was resolved by upgrading to Nvidia 91.28; which are my current drivers. After that upgrade I had no problems playing SS2. :)
So now I read this thread and I realize I haven't played Thief in a bit; at least since upgrading to 91.28. So I gave it a shot.
I started Darkloader and loaded up the Thief 1 mission Good vs Bad. It appears to run just fine. So I then tried the Thief 2 mission The Quiet Heat. It also loaded right up and went into the mission.
I didn't really play either one - just got them loaded up and in game. No apparent problems.
What do you mean by, "If you want to use one of the new 91.xx version nVidia driver, Thief 1,Gold and Thief 2 will not work"?

After loading a mission, thief 2 crashes with some message about "invalid texture memory information" or so. It will work if you set that option in the cfg-file (as described in the OP).

Answer from NVidia:
The annoying problem you cite is already noted in the release notes and will be fixed at an undisclosed date in the future. We recommend you to roll back to the previous drivers.

I also hope they will FINALLY make their drivers compatible with Rebellion's Alien vs. Predator.
