If you've been prompted in the last couple of days to download the new system update for your ps3 be warned, It will remove the ability to partition your Hard Drive and install an "other OS" I downloaded the update and it warned me of this before I installed so I cancelled. It probably wont make a difference to most users here, but I'm not about to give up Ubuntu in my living room.

I have a Slim so ... yay.

I tried it for a day, but I didn't really have any particular use for it, as I already have a Mac Mini connected to my TV. I did a backup and reformat to get rid of it a little while ago.
But this is pretty lousy for people who actually do use the feature.

according to the link Malf posted, this guy's hack will actually give slims the ability to install OtherOS.
what I would really like is some way to do a custom partition (something other than 90/10) and to take away the protected environment so I can use the video card in linux.
acutally it would be nice to do this natively, the PS3 is the coolest console because it mostly does act like a computer, they should give us a little more freedom to use it like one.

Would be nice. One of the first accessories I bought for it was a wireless keyboard, and it served as a fair replacement for my PC last year when I was having problems as my main desktop.
I'm even tempted to whack in a new, large hard disk, but the only thing holding me back is that apparently, Demon's Souls saves are protected, and don't transfer.

My Slim's still running 3.15, guess I don't have any sort of auto-update enabled or anything. All the better, if the (

Yeah, that would likely present some interesting opportunities. I think I recall a mention of someone looking into the video card issue, but not sure.
Here's a question, though, I'm not really familiar with the matter - if you can hack the thing to (re)allow installing Linux, what's preventing a similar approach to putting Windows on it? Is it a lack of Windows drivers for the hardware, or what else?

There is no version of windows for the cell processor.

I can't install Linux on my video game console? Outrage.

Installed it, but never used it. It just ran at a snail's pace.
