New PS3 update is pro stereo 3D. - by Ostriig

It looks like Sony (
http://kotaku.com/5521623/ps3-update-readies-console-for-3d-gaming) is gearing up to launch stereoscopic 3D support with the PS3 v3.30 patch and their upcoming line of 3D ready Bravias.
So I take it they're going for polarized specs and rolling out the TVs to support it? I haven't heard anything about Sony prepping up a line of flicker specs. I suppose it makes sense as, regardless of what the visual experience is with either (haven't had the chance to try nVidia's flickers yet), there's this point I heard a higher-up at Blitz make a little while ago - for a livingroom act, a single expensive TV (polarised light) coupled with as many cheap pairs of glasses as needed
may turn out to be more attractive to the target market than a cheaper TV (120/200 Hz only req), but with expensive flicker specs required for everyone in the audience.

Y'know, the only problem I have with this idea, and it's one that just about everybody and their crotchety old grandpop who looks like Roger Ebert has already mentioned, is that wearing those specs at home while watching the telly is going to make people look really fucking retarded.

So do headsets, which is a norm now for online gaming so meh.
I remember playing Thief 2 a looooooong time ago, using ELSA Relevator 3d Shutter Glasses, and it was fucking amazing. I would LOVE to see the 3d effect in gaming again. In movies its nice but its not that present. When you control the viewpoint, the action, etc, the 3d effect is much more present. And the application is obvious. Racing games and FPS would benefit greatly from the depth. I'm all for it.

Not in my household, no sirree. In front of the PC, sure. But not when there's people around and I'm on the couch. Call me old fashioned, I guess.

They've already started making polarised glasses that look like decently stylish sunglasses (more comfy, too), so you're not stuck with the cheapos from the cinema if you don't want to.

Funny thing, but there's actually a comment on that Kotaku article along the lines of "I don't like stereo 3d, I hope the 360 doesn't follow suit". And I'm sitting here making my best Johnny Bravo eyebrow impression thinking "Why, do you hate having a fucking choice?" Are there people out there thinking the stereo 3d is non-optional or something?

Well, much like the 2d crowd who hated on 3d in its early days, these people are afraid that stereo 3d is going to become the norm (which it could very well be once the technology gets cheap and versatile enough)

(
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-making-of-ps3-3d-article?page=3) Eurogamer go into technical details for the new PS3 stereoscopic 3D process and the way some titles are being retrofitted for its launch. Only three full titles and a demo are to available right off the bat, with more coming later. A bit curious, as I remember early speculation that a wide variety of PS3 titles would be easy and quick to convert to the tech, as I seem to recall having been the case for nVidia when launching their stereo 3D support ((
http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_3D_Games.html) which has now expanded very nicely).
Another important point is that these retrofits seem to be struggling with the PS3's hardware, and that cutbacks in resolution from 1080 to 720 and in framerate from 60 to 30 may be things users will have to put up with for them. Dont' expect to be running anything like a maxed out Metro 2033 in stereo 3D on the PS3, stuff like that will likely stay an exclusive perk of the PC platform, thanks to the continued development of hardware, until the next generation of consoles.
And time for some good news, too - they say "it'll work on more than just Sony's own 3D sets". But then another comment throws me off again with regards to the sort of 3D TV that will be used. The author of the article states that "just the eye wear solus isn't exactly cheap right now (not all 3D sets come with 3D glasses)", which would suggest that what he saw was through shutter glasses and a high-refresh screen. The other option, one that I have had the chance to test myself, involved a more expensive polarised light TV but worked with dirt-cheap realD glasses, the exact sort they give you at the cinema.

It's true, it could become the norm if supporting hardware becomes widespread enough and it proves popular, but they're just being tinfoily if they're expecting it would become in any way a must. There's simply nothing to gain by not providing a non-stereoscopic with your game, all the tech's already in there, and such a move would be like dropping stereo sound and pushing surround as an absolute requirement.

Much like this generation of console hardware is usually referred to as the 'HD console gen', we should just wait until next generation (and the hardware is up to snuff, so to speak) and refer to it as the '3-D console gen'.

Further temptations made by Sony to get people to download the update and remove the hole that allowed the current hack available to mod your ps3's.
Stereo 3D would be pretty awesome though.

Wow, we just may re-enter an age where games have "3D" in the title.
