I was going to be all sad that they're potentially raping a memory, but yeah, as I actually thought about it, Syndicate wasn't really much of a tactical strategy game despite using the traditional tactical strategy camera and HUD. I can't really think of much gameplay that would change other than that you wouldn't have control over 3 other agents simultaneously.
I'm hoping it plays off more of the corporate angle and the potential business management / upgrade part of the Syndicate franchise, but that snippet gives me the impression it'll be a shooter with experience points you spend in upgrades akin to Deus Ex and Mass Effect. Which we can say is totally a ripoff of those games, as if they didn't get their inspiration from games like Syndicate in the first place. :p
The irony will be that people will complain that the new syndicate will not be as much of a shooter as it should be.
Since often in the original you would mow down entire crowds with miniguns. Starbreeze as a game company and their own tech has never been around those kind of enemy-amounts.

What made Syndicate for me was the original art direction, but most prominently the fusion of isometric viewpoint and instant action. What made Syndicate great was how using tactics became a much fast-paced deal. Sure, you had to try some levels a plenty of time before finishing, but that was part of the fun. Each try eched you an inch towards your goal.
This new Syndicate might turn out to be a good game on it's own and I'm definitely going to give it a go, but it's just completely different to the original, which is a shame, since I think there's so much potential still left there.

What made Syndicate for me was the way your dudes would run in a straight line to whatever target you pointed them at, and if a building got in the way they would start running along it's wall and into the building and then take forever running through all the rooms while you swore and clicked frenetically all over the place trying to get your guys to come back out of the house.
And also you could run people over with the hovercars.
Meeeemorieeees...

The sound effects were what made Syndicate for me. From the 'puchmm. Ka-chick' of the shotgun to the 'phihshshshsh' of the Persuadertron and the weird 'peow' of the laser, I can still recall most of them today.

For me it was having my fully upgraded 4 man team standing at a 4 way intersection, mini-guns equipped, left and right clicking simultaneously to put the team on max adrenaline and then sitting back and watching them mow down 50 or more enemy agents rushing in from all sides with that awesome music that would play when enemies were nearby.
That's Syndicate for me.
Just thinking about that makes me want to go play it.

never having played the original games i have no attachment to the series or the nostalgia and look forward to the remake. reading the latest article about it on gamespot makes me very interested in the game. if they try and keep a lot of the old items and abilities it sounds like it will be quite fun.
the thing that bothers me about this game is about how much people are loathing the FPS style. there was even a start/select video about it that acted like FPS are the bane of video games. i think people are taking that a bit far but whatever.
also im going to enjoy being on the other side of the franchise for a change. FO3 was infuriating...

If the game didn't have the name Syndicate on it, then it would no issue.
To put this in its more simplest form: If you use an established IP you have to expect that fans of that IP will have certain expectations of what the gameplay will include, based on the previous uses of that IP.
For those who've never played the other 2 games before, the game could be called "Hello Kitty Shotgun Paradise" and your expectations would be the same (other than that there might be cats in it :p), but for those of us who've played the others its a completely different story.
But putting the game out under a different name entirely would = it being new IP which is seen as very risky business in the games industry these days why is why they went with it. Since with using an established IP you have an immediate audience who will be interested in your game, but if you then go and put out something that is COMPLETELY different to the past uses of it then you run the risk of losing that audience.

To me, it's more the fact that publishers nowadays seem to choose nothing but FPSs for their reboots (XCOM, Syndicate, (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/09/13/monkey-island-fps-revealed/) Monkey Island, just to name a few ;)). I have nothing against them changing the genre as such, but the fact that it's yet another FPS in an already crowded market is just... boring. Nevertheless, I'll still give these games the benefit of the doubt, and will judge them on their own merit once they are released.

oh no... i totally get that. hence i mentioned Fallout...
im sure the diehards of the old games wont love it but it sounds like its a remake with merit. the concept is very 90s and i think that style of storyline is fading from games these days. the concept alone makes the game have merit in my opinion. the execution of it is up for debate by its original fans but im just saying as a newcomer to the franchise it sounds like fun.
regarding FPS games - i dont actually "feel" that there are too many. i know theres a lot but i only play the ones i care about. out of the dozen ps3 games that i plan to keep forever only 2 are FPS, im only looking forward to buying 2 shooters (mw3 and red dead redemption GOTY edition), and it just doesnt affect me the same way i guess. the market may seem saturated with shooters but saturation is in perception.
i could easily argue that theres too many sports games - "a new version of each sport every single year! WTF?" - but im not one for tilting at windmills.

The biggest offender has never been the first person view itself, the biggest offender has been sacrificing any gameplay these old games had, and even often the setting itself.
I could very well see a syndicate style game working in first person, the fit would be perfect, imagine swat4 in the same moody universe, but you know the results.
