Fire elementals are vulnerable to basically anything but fire. In the classic game a single broadhead kills an unalerted one, and even backstab works -- of course water arrow is the most effective, as it oneshots them most of the time, but sometimes the water arrow vaporizes (wow!).
However, they're tricky enemies after alerted, because they passively deal damage in close range and also fire damage (i.e. they're in their own firebolts' exploding range) heals them. Their size corresponds with how much health they have left.
The one in this mission seemed to be super touchy. It became alerted very easily and needed a flurry of arrows (including a few retries) to be killed before it could retaliate. Also backstabbing it was impossible as it immediately got fully alerted when I came into melee range.

all I did in the lowest area is just follow the fire elemental - the patrol path didn't vary at all so it was trivial to dodge. no need to interact with it all

Wow  this mission is amazing! Enjoyed it so much with its special atmosphere!
I was stuck with
scrolls of Zot but have found clues (

However, i have 2 more questions:
1. about
secret statue rooms: i have found
3 so far, are there any more?
2. somewhere at the very bottom, where
3 spiders are hiding, you can see through
a grid down into a deep space full of books (at least it looks deep). is there any way to get down there?
Oh my, thank you very much for this mission!

There isn't any water arrows because there is (almost) no open-fire light sources (all those books are flammable after all). There is, however,
a gas arrow in one of secret statue rooms. The one near
wooden staircase leading up the tower in building B.I saw the panel, but never found a switch to open it.
There is one in
the West side of building A with a
book switch that has several moss arrows.
Did I find a 3rd? Now I can't remember

MrMunkeepants, I believe there should be a large clock in the room that has the secret door.

The only clock I can think of is in
building D, in a room with glowing mushrooms and dust motes in the air. There is a switch, but it only opens
a shortcut to a room above, near the Lower Tunnel Access lever.
