New Theifish game spotted. - by mlipham

Gentle Thieves,
Yesterday while in Staples, I spotted a new (to me) game called "STOLEN". It was not very expensive - even for Canada. The box claims it came out in March 2005, so it isn't that new. Now I apologize if this has been discussed before as I do not have time to read every post. Needless to say I bought it and installed it that night. I thought I'd share my opinion on the matter with the thieving community.
First, it is only 2 disks and about 1.2 gigs of Disk space used. I am running it on a AMD 2800+ with a gig of RAM and a GeForce 5700 - 256MB RAM Graphics card.
It ran fine at lowest resolution, but when I cranked it up to 1024xwhatever, it got a little choppy. :erg: Also, the controls, in my opinion are not as intuitive as they could be, but then again, it is always a learning experience with new games and I am sure that I would get used to it.
It felt like the latest Deus Ex game, but the thief, a female, is predominately in third person. Used to Thief, I was't enthralled by that. The heads-up display also feels like Deus Ex. In my opinion this lacks the feel, simplicity and elegance of hte Thief series.
On the other hand, it was actually pretty easy to perform physical acts in the environment, which isn't always the case in Thief. It is easy because much of it is automated for you. Just run to the wall, press space and she leaps up the wall for you. There is no "finding the right spot" to attempt lifting yourself up.
Many of the features seem to me to be an emulation of the original Thief series. I think they clearly had Thief in mind when they made it. All that said, it isn't holding my attention like Thief. However, I'll keep messing with it and see if it grows on me.
I'd say it was worth the $19 Canadian dollars for it - so far.
That's my $.02, or $.017 US. ;)

I've had to choose between that game and a game called Rogue Ops which looked very similar. They're both Thievish games but not in the 'shoot out a fire torch and sneak up behind the guy' stealth. More like 'hide behind the boxes and break the guy's neck when his back is turned'. All the rooms are well-lit and such. Rogue Ops is an okay game, though, although between shooting the guys and hacking into computers it hardly seems like a true stealth game.
Maybe Stolen was better - I don't know. It took me forever to decide between the two and I finally took Rogue Ops.

Stolen is a piece of unfinished crap. If I remember correctly, the company went out of business before it was even properly finished. I picked it up out of the bargain bin back in June. I only bought it to look into the guards waking up feature they promoted. It's horrible.

The publishers of Stolen should be paying you for playing their half-assed boobs=plot cock up of a 'game.' But maybe I'm biased.*
*Because it sucked the sweat off a dead man's balls...

I remember playing a demo of this on my Xbox before I got rid of it. Kinda reminded me of a cross between Splinter Cell and Tomb Raider....

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Thats my new "thief"ish game, and it rocks!

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is Ok, I just have some issues with the CD key and CD protection software. For one, the CD protection software is, I daresay, overpowered, and can damage your PC. And the CD key is the same for everyone (at least to play the game, not online) and is wrong on the retail version as well. Not one of UBISOFT's best ideas

My new "Thiefish" game of the month is Manhunt.
Which isn't new, and I have played it before. But it's got some great stealth-gameplay anyway(if you can stomach the gore).
Also, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones has a surprisingly good (and even original) stealth-system.

One other, very good thiefy game, is Sniper Elite. It is basically an assasin game in 2nd world war, but the stealth and tension is as thiefy as it can get outside Thief. :)

There's this great thiefish game called '3D Pinball for Windows', just instead of creeping round medieval/steampunk themed environs you fire metal balls at neon-light covered bumpers to strange zapping sounds. Unfortunately it only comes packaged with an AU$200+ OS with serious stability issues. Such is life.
EDIT: I'll use the poor man's defence: someone was going to say it...
