Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
I liked this game but was actually shocked that people comapre it to Thief because of how annoyingly linear it becomes. I've rarely felt so led around by the nose in a game. It was far less 'thiefy' than DX or even NOLF but for some reason everyone draws a close comparison between SC and Thief. Stealth doesn't work without options - largely speaking there must be options for method (of accomplishing objectives or dispatching an enemy) but there must also be options in terms of approach (how many paths (both vertical and horizontal), doorways, etc.). Splinter Cell barely suceeds with the former, and fails miserably with the later. Don't get me wrong - overall it's a great game, but I didn't feel any similarities to Thief in the philisophical sense.

CD keys suck. I tried to install the last SC release on my new machine and it won't accept the f'ing code!!!
Sc games are kinda fun but to compare it to Thief.:erm:

The closest game I ever saw to the Thief series, speaking only in terms of gameplay and not by any stretch of the imagination in terms of character, was No One Lives Forever 2. It was a 70s-era-James-Bond-themed first person shooter that gave the player the ability to hide in shadows, knockout opponents or kill them, pick up bodies, pick locks, read notes. I once lured a guard out by leaving a trail of footprints in the snow; he saw them, got suspicious (but not too suspicious), and followed them around a corner where I could dispatch him without being seen by the others. Best of all it contained a large number of humorous conversations between guards. It fell short because killing opponents was easy even on the highest difficulty and because some times your opponents were just too ridiculous, like the army of french mimes. NOLF2 was put out way back in 2002 by Monolith. An unofficial toolkit for editors was apparently put out in 2003 according to Fileplanet, but their mod community seems to be pretty small and more or less limited to deathmatch play. I've replayed the game a couple of times over the years, and I'll always have a fondness for it.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Thats my new "thief"ish game, and it rocks!
I'm sorry, but Chaos Theory plain sucks. Can't be compared to Thief in no effing way.
Don't get me wrong - I am a Splinter Cell fan. But CT is ridiculously easy and seems to cater more to the DM kids than to the stealth players. Thankfully, they still have the Versus multiplayer, which is my addiction since the PT MP demo. Anyway...

I hear ya hermit. NOLF (both 1 and 2) were excellent games in their own right. Great immersion, attempt at plot, lots of readables, etc. I think they were so kitchy that it's hard to compare them to Thief ambient/darkness feel. Kate Archer was a good lead character and the weapons were fun.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is Ok, I just have some issues with the CD key and CD protection software. For one, the CD protection software is, I daresay, overpowered, and can damage your PC.
What do you mean "can damage"?

the chronicles of riddick game is really the only game i can think of that really reached anywhere near the stealth implementation of thief - and was sufficiently nonlinear aswell to allow some player exploration and illusion of freedom
the splinter cell series are just insulting
the new elder scrolls game oblivion has some great stealth features
but it's really way too easy for us taffers me thinks

You know, you may very well be right about the second part, but considering that CT is a sneaker game, you are just an idiot.
As as for it "plain suck"ing, obviously you have no real opinion, as the game was far better technology wise, far better user interface wise, and while the plot wasn't as good, it had a good plot non the less.
So let me repeat, you are elitist ***holes.

Actually, I am an elitist ***hole that is a Splinter Cell fan and visits the official forums every effing day. I am very aware of how to form an opinion, and I share it with many others, who have been playing the game since the original.
If an opinion that contradicts yours is "no real opinion", then
you are the elitist dumb***.
The game had good graphics and a slightly upgraded interface... so what?! The AI was dumb, the rating system was innacurate, the knife and knockout attacks made the game easier and the firearms were redundant for the most part. The plot was crap, the "funny" conversations between Sam and his guys and the interrogations were quantity over quality(opposite from the previous titles, where conversations were rare but had quality humour).
How's that for an opinion, smart***?
