Hey all, though I've heard a lot about the Thief series, and though I've played (and loved) games such as System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, I've never gotten around to trying Thief out until now.
So I was wondering, which is the best game to start out on? Does it matter if I play Thief 1 or 2 in order or not? I have also heard that the original version of Thief is somehow better than Thief Gold. Is this true, and if is, for what reasons? Is Thief 3 worth playing, or is it similar in its effect to Deus Ex: Invisible War?
Thanks for your help on any of these points.

Since it's a trilogy, and the first is considered by the majority to be the best, I suggest starting at the beginning. The merits of any one game over the other provide endless arguments, but if you don't own any of the games, try to get ahold of Gold. More bang for the buck, although some will tell you the three extra missions aren't worth it. But yeah, start at the beginning.
Hope you at least get a kick out of it.:thumb: Welcome to ThiefGen!

It's a matter of taste: Some say that TDP is better and some say that TDP Gold is better. If you are like me and don't like large mansions (and the alike), I think you would enjoy the original TDP more than the gold-version.
Get both if you can, but if you have to choose, I myself would recommend the original TDP.

I'd recommend playing through them in order. Thief 1 has a nice (though simple) in-game tutorial whereas Thief 2 would throw you straight into the action. Thief 2's plot also continues where Thief 1 left you.
The third one isn't as dependant from them, but has references to the earlier games.

You can skip the extra missions in Thief Gold, if you want.
Start the game with the GoldSkip.exe in your Thief directory.
And then there's DromEd 1, but that's another deal altogether.

So what is it about the extra missions that people don't like anyway? Are they just too long, or is it some other issue?

Maze-like, and too much of that because they are huge. Also, it slows the main story down.
Aside from the extra missions, there's an additional area added to one mission we call "Little Big World". It rarely gets any true complaints.

They change the flow of the story for no great benefit, or people just plain don't like them all that much individually.

I havent played Dark Project but I can tell you that I wouldnt want to miss the 3 additional missions Gold added. Even more so in that they cant be considered "monster"-missions unlike so many others in TDP thus shifting the focus towards more conventional thieving.
Thiefs Guild is one of my favourites, once you play it for the second time its not so much of a mace anymore. As for the story, the idea of having 4 talismans hidden in 4 separate places rather than only 2 is more convincing to me.

The three extra Missions represent a halfway-point between Thiefs I and II. The graphics were a little better, a little flashier but not quite Thief II level, as it was the old engine still. It was a cheap way to sell TDP again and show off where they were heading with the engine. Those Missions don't really have the same feel as the originals, at least to me they stand out like sore thumbs. I would say play The Dark Project and if you get totally sucked into Thief, well then get Gold as well!
