For me I've always felt that its the unknown that's more scarier / spookier than when it's all spelled out in front of you. Until the movie Laura Palmer's fathers actions appeared more as the actions of a man possessed by an evil spirit/demon. The movie confirms this in part, but then also adds some stuff in about him being into it in his own way, and that he was molesting her for quite some time. None of that was mentioned in the series. Plus there is some completely unnecessary scenes in there, like the club sex scene, and some others with other cast members where the acting was just horrible. Like the actors had forgotten how they'd played those parts in the main series and the life had been taken out of them. I just absolutely hated it.
Good parts:
Despite Chris Isaak's awful acting (he does somewhat better acting in Silence of the Lambs), the first quarter of the movie until it gets to the Laura Palmer stuff.
The final bits of the movie aren't bad either. It's just the rest that I really hated.

I liked "Fire Walk With Me" and the book "Diary of Laura Palmer" wasn't so bad, either. I was like a cult watcher with this show when I was in college. There was a group of us who got together and marathoned it a few times. I can only say that I hope it will be as good as the original.
