Quake 2 grew on me, but it's no Quake 1.

I loved both Quake 2 and Quake 4. Though admittedly nostalgia is playing a big role in the former mentioned.

Raven rocks. The end.

Dont' forget Heretic and Hexen.
Hexen especially, what a fantastic game for the time.

Q4 was a sad joke. Q2 was awesome.

I was surprised how fun Quake 4 was when I played considering the mediocre reviews it had been getting.
I remember specifically PC Gamer giving it a 70%, but it was quite obvious they were just overcompensating for the embarrassingly high score which they game Doom 3.

Q4 was the best parts of Call of Duty and Doom 3 rolled into one. How could I not like it?
Fuck Hexen though. Hexen II is a million times better than the first game's irritating key/switch hunt bullshit.

Q4 had some stunning set-pieces.
Everyone quotes the Stroggification sequence, but one that I rarely see mentioned that I found just as cool, was the drop-pod insertion, where your pod tore through the Strogg base.
Unfortunately, it also got "Ravened" to some extent, where the content felt a bit generic and out-of-place in an id game. I have the same worry that the same will be true of this new Wolfenstein.
There's something about Raven games that I can't quite put my finger on. They're like the Bioware of FPS games, where everything is polished and well-executed, but a bit soulless.

To be fair I've tried playing through Jedi Outcast twice and both times I got lost not knowing where to go next. After running around said levels for what seemed like hours, I'd just give up and shelve the game.
I always loathed that about old school FPSes, you'd end up lost not knowing where to go. I lost count of the number of times I wound up running emptied levels in Doom 1 & 2 for fucking hours.
Oh and FUCK Hexen 1, that was the epitome of "you're now lost within this labyrinth of a level FOREVER!"

I have a good sense of direction in FPSes and hardly get lost, less of a factor today obviously but even in stuff like Hexen 1 I would always know where to go, but for some reason I got lost in a number of places in the various Star War FPSes. From Dark Forces to Jedi Outcast, I've spent many moments wandering around in circles and I don't know if it's the grey Imperial interiors or just some weird Star Wars blindness. :p
As far as Raven is concerned I am a big fan of the Hexen games, I still play both every now and again, and the Jedi Outcast games were pretty good too. I felt Q4 was a bit of a mixed bag, it starts strong and like Malf says has some stunning set pieces, but gets pretty dull in the second half. I think a big problem was a played it on hard from the get go and if I recall correctly it was the kind of hard that ups the hit points of the enemies which meant that a lot of the later sections became tiresome grinds.
They did Heretic II as well right? That was a pretty fun game.
