How many hours did it last you, mothra? 8-10?
Also how's the MP? The RtCW + Enemy Territory communities seem to hate it, criticising it for having slow movement speed and iron sights.
I've ordered an Asian English release from play-asia.com, since it's like $50-60 cheaper than the ridiculous NZ RRP ($130).

That looks ridiculous, only the elite will be able to run the new Wolfenstein:eek:.
The real, non-Intel marketing BS requirements are:
*Pentium 4 3.2 GHz or AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3400+ processor
*1GB RAM
*256MB NVIDIA Geforce 6800 or Radeon X800 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible *sound card
*8GB Space

Fuck Hexen though. Hexen II is a million times better than the first game's irritating key/switch hunt bullshit.
Hexen II is the same thing. You have to wander through entire levels multiple times, when you finally get the right keys for whatever doors and such. They have that hub setup where you easily warp between levels.

Unfortunately, it also got "Ravened" to some extent, where the content felt a bit generic and out-of-place in an id game. I have the same worry that the same will be true of this new Wolfenstein.
There's something about Raven games that I can't quite put my finger on. They're like the Bioware of FPS games, where everything is polished and well-executed, but a bit soulless.
The biggest thing that made Quake 4 feel generic to me was that the soundtrack was so limp. See other Quake games or even Doom3. Quake 4 even reminded me of Elite Force during its squad moments. It just didn't have an edge to it most of the time. Doom3 did the look and feel better IMO.
You're right. They do a competent, safe job, staying within the accepted norms usually. Bland and generic but adequate.

yeah, i would say 10h including sidemissions on hard but I didn't go hunting for gold or intel, so I missed out a lot of worthless exploring imo. also the "hubworld" - a series of 3 connecting bigger citymaps gets repopulated with enemies each new mission or when you leave/enter hideouts so you could stretch that a little more. I like creeping around them and stabbing them in the back with my bayonetted silenced kark. mulitplayer is an afterthought, nothing to see there.

Dethtoll, have you had an opportunity to play this new game yet?
Not bothering.

Not to the extent of the first game, and you don't have Diablo-level enemy counts to wade through. The Guardian of Steel areas in the first hub of Hexen 1 has to be the worst part of the game, though I'm not a fan of most of Hub 5 either.
That and Hexen II's varied areas are much more interesting to look at. They actually
look like the castles and tombs and whatnot you're supposed to be exploring.

True. I remember that Hexen II was considered one of the reasons to own a 3D card. It has some fairly cool locations.

Hexen 2 becomes very pretty to look at and even moodier with a couple of add-ons that improve graphics and add effects like bloom and such. I'm feeling the need to replay it now that you guys started talking about it.
Anyway, me and a friend are both saving cash to get ourselves a copy of Wolfenstein to share since the price of it is just ridiculous over here (more than for other games).

Just finished it under hard difficulty and it wasn't really that hard. I only died a couple of times since the medallion works wonders in sticky situations.
I went through it pretty fast, about 9 hours, but at some points I rushed it since I didn't feel the need to stick around and search for intel, gold and tomes (though tomes are useful for the medallion). It's pretty fun though sometimes I feel as if it doesn't give you the opportunity to use all the weapons (I barely used the Tesla gun if not at all up until the last few levels/missions). I'm happy that they included more nazi experimental weapon tech besides the Tesla gun which was brought back from the previous game. The plot is good enough to take you through the game and the 3 hub locations are fairly big and interesting to go through, with different enemies spawning each time you pass through them.
I need to say something about graphics. The lighting, mood and design in some areas is just completely awesome. There's the hand weirdness on pretty much every soldier that makes them look like they're 90 years old. I'm a bit pissed that they dissed the AA and didn't even bother offering support for people that would want to force it through their vid card. And before you cal me a graphics whore because of this, I'll tell you why I would have liked AA. On my rig setup it's best if I turn on effects and lower the resolution to 800x640 because I have a crt monitor and things actually look better (well sort of a real movie haze thingy and texture problems are harder to spot) IMO on lower resolutions. Now if I throw in some AA, like 2 or 4, I end up with a really good looking game working on a fair amount of resources.
Also, B.J kind of looks like Serious Sam from a couple of angles. I think it's the hair... or the mouth... or the nose... or the look. Ah hell, it's a fun game.
EvaUnit02 on 27/8/2009 at 13:42
What the FUCK, there's no AA support?! Every other IdTech 4 game supports it but this doesn't? ARRRGH.
EDIT: Wait, have you tried playing around with console commands/creating custom cfgs, i.e. ones from Quake 4?
Eg:-
seta r_multiSamples "2"
Ah, right. They've changed the renderer from OpenGL to DirectX (goodbye Lunix binaries and the eventual release of the source code). The way that they implemented HDR is like that of Stalker's X-ray engine or UE3.0, deferred rendering is used so AA is difficult to incorporate - at least on DX9.
mothra on 27/8/2009 at 14:20
raven tried to get everything out of old id tech4 so they had to cut corners. btw, I used the tesla most of the time together with the kark. tesla is kinda what they came up instead of another shotgun. electrocute to the face is always fun.
Xenith on 27/8/2009 at 14:32
I'm pretty sure I tried a lot of stuff to get AA to work, but I'm always open for suggestions. As it is right now, unless they decide to work some more on it and offer support for at least forcing it via vid card through a patch I don't see how it will work otherwise. It's kind of the same as it is with TimeShift who will also refuse any AA except in some cases.
I've had a lot of trouble using the Tesla since the female assassins tend to come up to your face and don't really mind being shocked the fuck out. They just keep slashing at me even though I send through them more than 50.000 volts of pure brain-frying electricity. It's still fun though. And I always admire the textures they're sporting. Guess that might be a factor in me shooting at them one second too late.
