I'm going to New York City this may for the first time ever. My wife, one year old daughter, and I will be going for four days. What the hell should I do there? There seems to be an overwhelming list of things to do and see. I'll mostly be on foot and we are staying on 7th ave. near where the Letterman show is taped. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The Intrepid Air and Space Museum and Central Park are already on the list.
Things I like:
Photography
Art
History
Architecture
Food!
Cemeteries

Central Park if you need a small break from all the intensity. Time Square at night for some nice photos. Also id recommend going outside manhattan (brooklyn or bronx) too just to see how that area differs (the metro system is good for going pretty much anywhere on foot).
Dont eat street vendor hot dogs. last time my friends had that, both got mad food poisoning.

Yeah, I don't do street vendors much. I made that mistake in Tijuana once.

I never got sick, but vendors are just a simple hotdog or peanuts anyway.
The Met museum or natural history museum is also cool, you could watch a Broadway show (a bit pricey, but fun), the major sights of course -- Empire State Bldg, Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, Rockefeller Center (nearer where you'll be). Central Park has a little zoo, but there's also the Bronx Zoo.

Seconding the Natural History Museum if you like that sort of thing, we spent about five hours in there because it's huge and awesome and they do Special Cake™
If you want to go to the statue of Liberty, get up early and be the first in the queue on the first boat. Don't try taking a muffin wrapped in foil inside though, because apparently the war on terror applies to muffins and a man with a very serious face will confiscate it and you will be hungry if that's your breakfast. THIS REALLY HAPPEN, grrr
Ellis island is fascinating if you like history, can be accessed on the ferry on the way back from Liberty island.
The guggenheim is worth a look if you like art, but was overpriced IMO.

I'll be in New York for work on the May 13th-15th week-end. Not sure about the schedule yet but a TTLG meet could be arranged :)

I'll be there May 23-26.

That'd be fun to set up a time-lapse camera and see how many hipsters take the bait.

BTW, with all the security theater surrounding it ruining the experience, I'd just hop on the (free) Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Much better view overall, imho :)
