I mostly use solids, because I find it easier to texture things that way - and to move stuff around or to clone a whole stairway etc... Another thing one can also do, especially for tall stairways, is to not let the steps fill out the space underneath and instead use a wedge for that purpose (unless you want to keep the space unfilled of course), which makes it quicker to clone individual steps, because you won't have to adjust the height when you move the step around.
Even when the space underneath a stairway isn't visible, it's good practice to fill it with a solid to save cells (most of the time, anyway, so always keep an eye on your cell count when building). Having a hole just underneath the surface could also, if unlucky, cause invisible holes in the ground you walk on, which AIs or the player may fall into - through what appears to be solid terrain.

when I go with solid brushes sometimes they just disappear, they are there on the map but nothing is showing after I portalize... not sure why, instead i just went with fill airs, stepping them up each step and adjusting it so the tops are all the same.
That could be because you have an air brush later in time, which surrounds the solid brush, so the air brush carves out the solid brush, and because the solid brush is fully contained, it disappears.

I see, didn't think about that.. i guess I need to pay attention to times.

I won't assume you know this, since you have "newb" in your topic title, but you can also just clone stuff instead of saving the multibrush. Shift+click a bunch of brushes (or just surround them with an area brush and click on "multi-brush-me") and then press the Insert key. Viola, exact duplicate. It may look like you haven't done anything on-screen, so make sure you shift+drag the duplicate away from the original.

I don't share your opinion about it working perfectly...
If it does exactly what it was designed to do, and doesn't crash or otherwise screw up in the process, then by definition it's working perfectly.
Perhaps you thought I meant that the stair tool is perfect for making stairs, which is an entirely different assertion.

How about this, when I test the level in game I go Alt+G , is there a way to make it windowed (the in game test) so it doesn't have to resize the screen each time i want to test a change in the level?

Go to the Game menu, and select Game Mode Settings. The flags let you choose between full screen and windowed, or you could make the resolution euqal to your desktop's.

Then, what was the point of your post? Perhaps you thought I meant that the stair tool crashes, which is an entirely different assertion. :p

Here's another one...is there a guide to tell you how high to make things , like walls so that the wall textures will match up with the height of say interior wall textures, the same for ceiling squares and other such things that will look nicer not lopped off in the middle. scaling doesn't always make it match.
