The market appeal for LCD's with deep blacks is unfortunately not there, at the moment.
Wrong. The appeal of deep blacks is why many people buy plasma screens. It's why full-array LED backlighting exists. It's why manufacturers crow about the contrast ratio of their screens. Everyone recognizes that deep blacks are good. It's just inherently difficult to pull off with any backlit display technology.

Mine's pretty good. If it didn't have its bizarrely diffuse glare screen it'd be great. Things have come a long way since the days of ubiquitous rubbish 6bit TN panels. It's more that even very good LCDs have different outputs to CRTs and gamma correction isn't quite the same. There's modes and boosters and so forth to compensate for this, but I don't want to play with them for every game. It's probably true that Dark was less than ideal in this department anyway. Most games just had a brightness or gamma setting and not much else back then.
Adding such features would just be another way to get more out of it. The ability to tweak different parts of the image and still keep the shadows where they ought to be would be especially good for Thief, obviously.
I don't know if it's do-able (not to mention who the heck to request features from), but I thought I'd bring it up anyway.

When I run the game in 1280x1024 the menu screens have a little black bar at the top and bottom.
Also, when I look at Garrett from a scouting orb and he is crouched, he is floating in the air like a foot off the ground. Not sure if that's a bug with the original game actually, but I just noticed it after I started using Newdark.
I just started playing a couple months ago, it's a good game.

the black bars are normal
and the floating garret could be a problem with where your standing
but it should not affect the gameplay

The black bars are due to you selecting a resolution that does not match the aspect ratio of your monitor.

NewDark will always display the menu in a proper (4:3) ratio - that means when you use a non-4:3 resolution, you will always have black bars somewhere.

wait, are you trying to tell me that people who want their image stretched actually exist?
when I have to look at a stretched image, it feels like I'm pooping through my eyes.

actualy 5:4 (1280x1024) is a 4:3 resolution : P so the black bars make 0 sense

Yes, and many of them. Like my parents say, "We paid for those pixels, we don't want them be black".
1280:1024 = 5:4
1280:960 = 4:3

a pound of bread will always be a pound of bread, no matter how thin you slice it.

4/3=1.33
5/4=1.25
so yeah they do. anyway, I believe there is a NewDark variable that will disable proper menu resizing, and allow you to
poop with your eyes enjoy all your pixels to the fullest.
Natebubba on 29/4/2013 at 19:12
Well... 1280x960 and 1152x864 also have black bars at the top and bottom, and those are 4:3. When I go down to 1024x768, there are no black bars, which makes no sense.
Idk if the fact that I'm using the Steam version makes any difference, I removed ddfix, which comes with it, by deleting the two files and changing the exe in a hex editor back to default, before I installed Newdark.
