I am building a T2 mission using Newdark for the first time. I found the Ambient light settings which used to be something like 20 20 20. I see in NewDark, this is set at 63 63 63. My question is, for those authors who have created a T2 FM using Newdark, what have you used for Ambient light settings? I would love as many comments/answers as possible so I can get a sense of what the range is. I know it is a matter of personal taste. I like to make my missions somewhat dark and use light so as to create paths where confrontations can be avoided but would be very interested in what other authors have used for settings and why.
Thanks for any comments.

I used 15, 15, 15 as a default, but I'm thinking of going down to 11 or 12 for the mission I'm finishing. Like you, I want the mission to feel quite dark when not near any lights. But I'm a little worried it's too dark, so I'll have to wait until beta-testing and see what others say about it. I think too I'm setting the brightness on my lights too low, so that only adds to the overall darkness level.

I think 63 63 63 is Dromed's default value, unchanged from the old days, but 20 20 20 is the standard for FMs and the OMs. I use 20.

I also like dark missions so that the contrast between light sources and shadows is more stark. I mostly go with values in the 12-18 range for that, varying as needed to match the coloration of the area. Note that in NewDark you can have different ambient light in different zones, all tied to roombrushes, and also different fog in each zone also. I utilized this in Drymian Codex a lot, making the above ground areas have higher, slightly blue ambient light (for moonlight), whereas the basement areas ambient light was a little darker and yellower. The crypts were darker still and had an orange cast in the unhaunted area (to match the torchlight color) and a very blue cast in the haunted crypt (because the eldritch torches in there had blue flames). I also had dense fog in the crypts, faint fog in the basement and none above ground. It's one of the really great additions to NewDark IMHO.

Thanks for the responses, very helpful. I thought the scale had mysteriously changed but it was great to hear what others are using and now gives me a sense of what I need to do.
Off to start lighting the mission.
Thanks again.

Yandros, are there tutorials on linking the ambients to the room brushes?

It really depends on the mission that I'm working on. Right now I'm working on two different missions, one being a city FM and the other being a horror FM. The city one I've chosen 20 20 20 for now but I'll probably go as low as 15 for it to create some more in depth ambience for it to make for a more dark city. As for the horror mission I've chosen to make it very dark at 10 10 10 to make it a truly scary experience as it makes for a much more moody atmosphere. But I might even go down as low as 5 or 7 so that you will be far more paranoid and some things you won't see coming but like I said it's horror so that's kind of the point :ebil:

It hardly merits a tutorial. Add -> Weather -> Local Weather.
