Nice memories, i shared my love, but my cd-1 of Thief 2 is no more to me - by unreal_taffer

About when my Thief I cd was getting all scratched to hell, I spent an afternoon of buffing it with a lint free cloth trying to make an ISO of the CD and put it on my file server (serves only to me on my home LAN). Whenever I want to play, I just mount the thing with Daemon tools. Installs in 10 seconds. =P

Why pay again for the game when you could use that money for other stuff (like candies) , and get your backup from the interweb.
It's not like looking glass is still there (rip) , or like any of the ones who made it will get a cent .
In fact, data being infinitely reproductible, I'd say selling Thief now is like taking a random pebble and painting it golden before selling it .
Maybe it's a matter of principle , I can understand, I still find it a tad stupid (really can't help it).
(and it's called Thief after all , but I kid)

Eidos is paying attention. Purchases are tallied, and they see that there is still an interest in the titles. I don't doubt the trickle of continued interest has played a part in Eidos trying to get another Thief game made. I'd rather have a genuine CD than only a copy I made for myself after downloading for hours, twice, because of a slow, interrupted connection. It's not stupid to show appreciation and gratitude.

On the net not all thief CDs are sold by Eidos;
and the best they could do was deadly shadows... I'm not very confident after that.
I went like 3 times through deadly shadow , plus a handful of FMs; and it cost me almost 2 times what I paid for Thief 2, there's no comparaison.
Only way I could change my opinion would be if old LGS was resurected.
Does anyone I should owe my apreciation to still works at eidos ?

I remember when Thief Deadly Shadows came out, I went to my local Gamestop and on a whim, asked them if they had Thief Gold. SON OF A GUN THEY DID! I lol'd hard reading the descriptions on the back about modern graphics and top-notch AI. I love old advertisements.
Best ten dollars I've ever spent.

(
http://www.activewin.com/articles/games/pr/article_1.shtml) An example.
Regardless of opinion and conflicting emotion, without Eidos we would not have
Thief Gold,
Metal Age, or
Deadly Shadows (made by many LGS people working for Ion Storm Austin, with botched software, in the age of console-takeovers. Eidos didn't make it, or the mistakes, but they financed, marketed, and distributed it). Eidos kept bailing LGS out financially, until it couldn't do so anymore. The trilogy, flawed as it is, is complete. Mistakes were made on all sides, but what they gave us is remarkable. Without Eidos, buying a new
Thief CD today would be very different, methinks.
I cannot believe the Eidos logo and still-valid copyright info is not included with the packaging or software, somewhere. They own the rights, and anyone else selling it must legally have permission from Eidos, and Eidos is making a percentage and taking notes while they look to make the fourth installment.

May 13, 1999--Eidos Interactive, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment, Thursday announced an agreement with Looking Glass Studios Inc. which will bring
four new titles based on the popular Thief franchise to market, including "Thief II: The Metal Age(tm),'' "Thief Gold(tm),''
plus two other as yet unnamed products based on the Thief franchise.
Anybody know what the original fourth
Thief game was going to be before the Thief Modern/Thug idea was announced in 2003?

I can't feel completely right with paying 'just' eidos for Thief...
Also , as for the movies , second hand sales should be completely legitimate (something you seems to be against);
but for some messed up reasons copyright law for video games are an utter mess.
Looks like I'm contradicting myself, I'm not, but it's a matter of opinion.

weren't these "plus two other" titles simply T2Gold and T3 (and not T3 and T4)? Thief was meant as a trilogy, after all (with Gold releases for each game, so typical for Eidos from that era - to get some additional cash in-between major releases).

You can buy a Thief collection that does not need dvd in drive easily (and cheap) here, maybe you can still make an exposition of these original discs and buy some of this cheap stuff to cover your need of a running game? :)
Like this one:
(
http://www.cenega.cz/hra.php?id_game=92&id_platform=1) HERE - Czech text warning!
At 259 Kc it's around 13 USD (Only the installer is partially Czech, the game is in English). I'm quite sure there is such compilation available elsewhere, isn't it?
I bought the same anthology edition here : (

I would recommedn it to unreal - it has all the needed patches and works flawlessly on Xp and probably on Vista as well (although the skyline graphics in TDP/TG become a bit blurred sometime, not effecting the gameplay though)...
