I see that Sega is going to release yet another Wii game aimed at the traditional (aka "hardcore") gaming audience. This time it's (
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/48076.html) The Conduit, what looks to be a pretty by-the-numbers post-Half-Life FPS (not a rail shooter either). Sega's recent releases of MadWorld and The House of the Dead: Overkill didn't do too well, (
http://kotaku.com/5216273/madworld-sells-66k-in-the-us-sega-seems-pleased) 66,000 and 45,000 sales in the US respectively. Who reckons that The Conduit will likely follow that pattern? Oh geez, (
http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=16724) look at how badly THQ's ambitious Deadly Creatures has done.
Capcom seems to have had success with their Resident Evil rail shooter ((
http://kotaku.com/363413/resident-evil-umbrella-chronicles-ships-a-million) 1 million sales worldwide as of March '08), (
http://kotaku.com/5234589/capcom-talks-madworld-hardcore-wii-gaming) but this article suggests that this is thanks to brand recognition. And that Dead Space rail shooter in the works? Another established brand, nowhere near as big as RE, but you get the idea.
It seems that the hardcore games don't seem to be selling, do you think that publishers should cut their losses and leave the Wii to the housewives wanting a fitness work-out and the kiddies playing Boom Blox and Rabid Rabbids?
IMO the motion sensing and pointing still show a lot of potential, I for one hope there continue to be Wii games on the horizon that are worth two shits.

The Wii is shit for third-party developers. Only Nintendo and Capcom stuff sell well on it.

Only looking forward to the new Silent Hill and Fragile. Wii is pretty shit.

Funny, as far as I can tell it's got next to jack all to do with hardcore or not, and everything to do with the undeniable fact that most of the games for the wii suck. And yes, there are such things as good casual games, but that's by and large not what they're putting on the wii.
Some companies are using it as their shovelware dump, and the ones that don't are largely clueless, still designing everything in control pad land and wondering why it doesn't work so good.

Nintendo fucking over people who actually care about video games aside, don't you think we're past the point of using "hardcore" to describe such people? I think anybody who enjoys games, either on a competitve level (like most people) or on a literary level (like me and i suspect like a lot of people here) is just a "gamer", all the other kids who only play Guitar Hero or w/e are the (filthy dirty heathen Cancer That Is Killing Video Games) casuals.

Personally, I'm just interested in knowing where to buy the towel with built in motion sensors for the Wii. HHGTTG for the Wii?
Phatose on 5/5/2009 at 03:13
Because what the wii is really short on is gimmicky add ons, right?

That's like saying there are no racing drivers, truck drivers or regular drivers, just "drivers".
