I just tried out (
https://nitronic-rush.com/) Nitronic Rush from some students at digipen. They're calling it a "survival driving game" whatever that means, but basically you're driving a car in a tron-like world. Oh yeah and your car has jets and can even fly. I'm enjoying it so far! The two main things I don't like about it are 1) the keyboard controls kinda suck- they pretty much made it for an xbox 360 controller, and 2) the "announcer" every time you do a flip, or reach a checkpoint, or even select menu items, is so irritating (but you can turn him off in the options thankfully).

Hah. Well that was short and sweet. I beat the storymode in about 20 minutes. Having the "end credits" be a playable level was a nice touch too. :)
Besides Tron I'd guess it's influenced a bit by Speed Racer as well. With the car that can jump and fly. Overall I really liked the gameplay. It's like a combination of racing game and third person platformer. And the ever-changing levels that constantly throw new hazards in your way was really cool. My only criticism would be that it's too forgiving. On one of the levels I died and bunch of times and got a lousy end-time. Yet I got to proceed to the next level anyhow. I guess when you do the "non story" missions the difficulty will be there in the form of trying to beat other people on the online leaderboard or improving on your own time. But for the storymode they really should've made it so you need to get a good enough time to proceed to the next level.

Well, I beat "Hardcore Death Machine". :) That would be this level:

It's really in the hardcore levels that the game forces you to make full use of the vehicle's capabilities. The storymode is just a pretty and short introduction to the game to get you hooked. I don't know why more people haven't played this game, or if they have, why they haven't posted their impressions. Trackmania fans would do well to check this one out. You really need a 360 controller though. I can't imagine all the small mid-flight adjustments being easy to do without a couple of analogue sticks.

Damn nice job! I tried the first hardcore course several times now but since I don't have a controller hooked up it's basically impossible for me to do. I'm not a huge fan of car games but I really enjoy this one- I also wonder why nobody else is trying it.

Total Biscuit has had a go.
This is one of the reasons reviews like his are very good. I would not have guessed what this game was like to play from looking at the trailer, or even videos of people playing well. It looks just like a Trackmania meets Wipeout thing with gravity defying mechanics. But no, you actually control those rockets all over your car. Dear lord.

I like TB's videos but
my god is he bad at this game. :|
Oh yeah, also: I beat <strike>all</strike>
half of the Challenge levels.

Not so. I just beat all the hardcore levels using the keyboard. It certainly is more difficult than using a gamepad though, and not as enjoyable.

Hey. I'm playing this. I'm having fun. It's got a stupid sense of humour and it's like the bastard lovechild of Tron, a stunt driving game, and an LSD overdose. That's right, it has three parents.
The controls are arcadey and the handling's a bit more firm than I'd like, but it's total driving jumping floaty spinny bang whack fun. All y'all should go play it.

There was a patch released for this game earlier this year and none of you guys TOLD ME about it, which means that either you don't love me anymore or you simply didn't know. Option A seems highly unlikely so I'm guessing you just didn't know, which is why I'm letting you know, now. The patch does what every patch ever should do and adds a DeLorean and a recreation of the hoverbike level from Battletoads.

There's also a few more Hardcore levels added as well as a bunch of Community levels. The community levels lack the polish of the Hardcore ones, but several of them make up for their lack of polish with insane difficulty instead.
