No, not another "will there be thief4" thread, but... - by Flux

...and two more things from my side:
1. It would be really bad if they screwed up the game more than they did with TDS. Those guys have always had contact with the community afaik; they knew what went wrong with TDS (and TDP/TMA!) and the surely knew what you guys thought about it (and I hope the reaction of the single communities all over the world reached them too, somehow). So I believe they have no incentive to create another game unless they're sure that they can make what they want to. That's my faith in human reason (or good).
2. I think I disagree that only (!) the fans would/could produce the "real" stuff that fans want to see. As I said before these projects would somehow sooner or later take on a life of their own and drift away from what the games really were. I'm sorry I'm not capable of making myself more clear for now, but since every fan project is just an interpretation, building upon these leads to some kind of spiral (in the worst case of course). That's why even if I was able to produce a fan mission every two months, I'd only finalise my three or four interesting ideas and then stop for the sake of "nativeness".

I have to tell ya, I dropped out of the Thief community several years ago and now i remember what I love about you guys, a pure LOVE of this game... I have never known any group of people so dedicated to a game as the Thief crowd, I have worked on several other projects and no where do you find the fan support of Thief fans.:thumb:
I still find the old FM's a pure joy to play, I love the old feel of the game...:thumb:

Yay, DUMBASS! \o/ Woot! :p
I think your post is fine, Beleg. I generally agree with the points you've made there. Particularly number 1.

If you look over to the NoX community, you'll find a group almost as dedicated (although not without their personality flaws) as the taffers here. Hell, they made their own map editor and mod maker for NoX, which should tell ya something about how dedicated they are to such an old game.
But all in all, I prefer the Thief community, too. Less assholes per board (save for CommShat).

I'll throw in a statement that relates to DA's comments as well as Thief 4 speculation. I am interested in these kinds of threads, regardless of whether another game is made, because (among many other reasons) I like to see how our views have evolved, or stayed the same over the years. It shows what is foundational to appreciating Thief and what comes more from a zeitgeist perspective.

After reading the comments on this page, I realized thief has been a more successful franchise than I thought. I mean, even on kotaku there are folks who say thief1 was the best and generally everyone seems excited.

Of course the fan-base will be all over this, but that's no indicator of success on the scale it would have to be. If there were only 1000 fans left today, they alone could fill the comment boards and make it seem overwhelming. But there are more than that, and only a small percentage will comment. But, of course, I do hope we get Eidos' attention and get them thinking about the fan-base if this isn't another Thief game in the works.

I can understand the excitement here, but on kotaku???...I'm surprised. Anyway, it's good to hear all those comments.

I think with the new material editor and some superb AI programming/modeling Thief 4 would be awesome, I am of course assuming they are going to use the new Unreal engine.
Considering that we already know that they're modifying Crystal Dynamics' current engine for Deus Ex 3, I don't think it's a stretch of the imagination to believe that they will be using the same engine for Thief 4. There also seems to be a lot of talk about the use of parkour abilities in the new tomb raider game, so chances are you will probably see something similar in a new Thief title.
Mmm, I wonder if it will be a Hitman/Thief crossover.

You got me there. I'm not at all familiar with those boards or what's normally expected there, but that makes it even more intriguing, certainly.

I agree. And that would be consistent with the original titles, as well.

(Melodramatically) Hello new generation, goodbye hope.:(
"Back! Back with you! ...Old, so old, all ruined... (sob sob sob)"
Kill me! Kill me now! O cruel cruel fates! (Shakes fist)
Heh. But seriously. Like I said, as long as it's not a requirement to play, and I can play very similarly to the original games, I can live with the change.
