No, not another "will there be thief4" thread, but... - by Flux

TDS rocked more than any other game in the series.. and it's the only game in the series where you play a thief (because thieves don't cary long swords...).
I'm SO hoping there will be a Thief4...

Heh heh, vurt, could you tell us what you liked in detail for more balance? Unless you're kidding around, I hope you realise comments like that just make TDS naysayers say "See what I mean?" If you play Thief the way you are supposed to, you don't need the sword or the dagger, anyway.

First off, and that's basically why I registered:
WOOOHOOOOOO!
Yes, it's too early, but I take the scrambled clues in this thread as definite proof of Thief 4 coming now.
jtr7, I like your ideas about body awareness in games. I for one love games where I can see my own feet and body, but I get what you mean.
You should definitely check out the coverage of
Mirror's Edge (by DICE, the Battlefield dev.). Here's a short (

Please explain why they included killing (and longswords, lol) if you werent supposed to use it at all.
I think the Thief games are supposed to be enjoyed by everyone, not just a really, really small "hardcore" group who thinks "ghosting" is the only way to play it. It's not that i don't enjoy it, usualy i play one level ghosting, next level mostly killing, it makes the gameplay a bit more varied and fun.

More on vurt's views of T1/T2/TDS (

Not picking on anyone here, I just think it's a good read, although it essentially turns out to be vurt & sanity vs. everyone. :cheeky:

I just love the game and think its extremely underrated (esp. here on TTLG) and i'm the kind of person who never gives up a discussion, many here are just the same which leads to endless argumenting ...most of the time i find it quite entertaining (for some bizzare reason, i probably just had a bad childhood or something ;) ).
"It's kinda funny, most of the Thief1-2 fanboys says that graphics doesnt matter it's all about gameplay. But when they come to discuss TDS it's a totaly different matter. All of a sudden texures, animations and graphical effects (such as glint etc) is what everyone is talking about and critizing. I think i've proved my point, bloody hypocrites."
i still think it's a good point i made in that thread :)

The game allows mugging, and other non-thiefy, non-sneaky, unstealthy behavior, yes. The games are loved for the way each person can play differently and win, yes. But the games' voice-overs and objectives also suggest quieter and less-deadly tactics, especially on Expert (hint, the better you are, the less assassinating and thuggery allowed). I don't ghost, myself, I usually don't have the time. I'd rather play a full mission in one sitting.
It's unrealistic but I'm glad you can't pick up AI's dropped weaponry and use it yourself. Seeing the violence-loving types take it as a slap against their blood-thirsty desires (they sure weren't going to fence the weapons) is personally satisfying. I like to go on occasional rampages, but then I reload and play efficiently and stealthily and try not to use up my gadgets and crystals, and therefore, never need to mug or pickpocket because I have no other choice.
Don't make me PM you with everything the game says to you to discourage killing and thuggery.:ebil:

TDS is treated different because it is different. The graphics become an issue because it's not the same graphics. Changes were made that weren't desired and are seen to detract from the overall feel and gameplay. LGS used motion-capture and the newest game did not. I can sense the real people behind the older games, but not in TDS. It's not hypocrasy, it's a different game with different aesthetics and choices behind it. The corporate feel is all over it, the mainstream feel is palpable. The LGS games were risky endeavors, and made with loving rebellion. TDS is Thief the way Phantom Menace is Star Wars.

After seeing some more artworks in the TDS guide I really start to love this morbid, filigree almost-art-noveau style of the tools and metalworks. Anyway, the TDS discussion is a too unforgiving one to be rolled out here again. Otherwise, I feel well prepared. :p
Concerning Rammstein; their style might fit to the very industrial, stamping-machine-like parts of Thief (since it is – or at least was for a long time – intentionally blunt and brutal), but they use the depth in their lyrics merely for decoration and amazing the audience with a blinking eye. That's why I would not recommend them although they might be not the worst choice.

I agree that arguing over TDS is tired and really not appropriate here. That's why I asked vurt to be more detailed and provide balance with his appreciation of TDS, so we might benefit. I have a hard time believing the dagger/sword was make/break, and I find his posts suspicious.:sly: :p

You've missed the point of those criticisms entirely vurt. The complaint is not that the animations and graphical effects look bad (although some of them surely do, though so did much of T1 and T2) - the POINT is what loot glint, glowing footprints, arrows, and faction symbols, etc. represent. In short, they represent a level of hand-holding and player direction that is more akin to linear/consolish shooter games, than they are to the original Thief games, which are non-linear, and assume a level of player intelligence that counts on them finding things on their own without neon signs pointing the way.
