Ok, excuse me, I'm half asleep and listening to the third iteration of a playlist consisting of DevilDriver, Cradle of Filth, and Fear Factory.
I have but one question, which is WAY off topic, but I must know... What happened to the metalian?

Seriously, if Eidos Montreal are making another Thief, then that's fantastic news, and they should be commended for their bravery in taking on such a well-oved game, and such a vocal community. I also think they need the freedom to make changes, brave changes, and not be constrained by what went before. If they just remake the dark project, I think you would end up with a very timid experience.
I don't care whether it's Garrett or not, whether there's 3rd person or not, I certainly don't care whether there's a sword or a dagger. It's more exciting to contemplate the ways this game could surpass all three previous titles.
What this game could do is give us The City as we've never seen it before, in all it's next-gen shader glory. Call me a graphics whore if you like, but if they nail the grimy steampunk aesthetic then this thing could be the most beautiful virtual environment ever created.
Assassins Creed has shown us what it's like to control an athletic and nimble avatar, which is in stark contrast to Garrett's fairly clumsy performance in all 3 games. I would exchange rope arrows for a nimble thief any day.
That's all I ask for. Oh, and rustmonkey to do the cutscenes :)

That's interesting. I thought a lot of the stealth challenge came from Garrett
not giving the impression of being particularly fast or acrobatic, unlike our heroes from other games. He's no Altair, no Prince of Persia. What he does well is hiding&sneaking, and he's a good marksman. Some say he's been rumored to actually master the art of sword melee, as well. But in general, he is pretty slow.
Of course, a Thief game not featuring Garrett could well be emphasising other aspects of the trade. In fact, it be logical if it did, since another thief just as good as or better than Garrett would simply be unbelievable. At least to some of us.* ;)
But you're not alone in wishing for an updated City sandbox.

*) not having played T2X, I don't know what explanation exists for the main character there.

Couldn't agree more. There is nothing wrong to be graphic whore. I never understand the big fuss about "How can they exclude [insert useless inventory item here]???". As long as the atmosphere there, I'm all good. Why would anyone need something more than a lock pick, blackjack and water arrows, that's beyond me.

Convenience of controls is one thing, and avatar's fitness is another. I don't want Thief main character to be athletic, because I don't want this game to be turned into jumpfest.
One aspect of Thief I like most is that it's more about inventing a way to do something, rather than actually doing it. If you lose, it's usually because you did something silly. And if you decide to take an extra challenge that requires some additional dexterity (for example, attack someone openly), it's because you chose to, not because there was no other option of progress. The whole point of Thief is to outsmart your enemies, rather than outmaneuver them. Let's keep it that way, please.
Just to be clear, I think I would enjoy a sanbox City. I would greatly enjoy increeased ability to do stuff. I'd like to be able to travel through sewers, streets, and rooftops, and I wouldn't mind occasional jump from one roof or window or balcony to another. I just don't want strictly arcadish challenges, unless they are optional (like swordfight in TDP and TMA). I don't enjoy jumping around. I enjoy lurking.
And I want rope arrows back.
Magpie - in Thief2x the main character starts as an ordinary person with no sneaksie skills. She improves after first mission due to training.

I´ve always seen Garrett as athletic.
In TDP he can run faster than anyone else (only the Haunts are on par with him). He can mantle a lot of things. He can swim. He can climb ropes. He can carry bodies on his shoulder.
Even the Keeper training mission looks like a giant gym test at the end. Artemus last request is to mantle a huge block!
Of course that doesn´t mean that Garrett should start Prince-of-Persia wall-running or easily avoid anyone with superjumps. But that doesn´t mean that he is "clumsy".
