No, not another "will there be thief4" thread, but... - by Flux

Whoops, I misread TDP as TDS. Now a remake of the The Dark Project? Ouch, isn't that like rewriting the bible? I'd love a Thief 4, but I think I would be very against a remake of the original. It's almost a cop out too, as there are so many potential stories to tell in the Thief mythology.
I've mentioned this before, but how about something like Garrett's greatest hits, his biggest heists before getting involved with Bafford's?

Given UBI's track record of late, if they did try to make a Thief, (as much as it pains me to say it) I'm sure they would try to include a "living breathing city", much like Assassins Creed or Splinter Cell V. I think that would be a tremendous mistake and wouldnt allow for the detail of the Thief world, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm not much a fan of UBI anymore.
The Thief intellectual property is owned by Eidos, not by Ubisoft. The rumor here is about Eidos Montreal -- not Ubisoft -- developing Thief IV. :thumb:

No. This kind of premise is proper for an expansion pack. I could live with Thief set in modern times, for example, but it has to have a strong storyline.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but...
I would like a proper sequel to TDS (story wise, of course, not gameplay!), with the girl as the player character and Garrett as the head of the reformed Keepers.

There definitely will be a Deus Ex 3. People want another Thief, too. We'll make that series more modern, though...the medieval thing's run its course. The coming year will bring some really new, innovative titles, plus comebacks from many brands gamers are already familiar with.

FLAME.
More Thiefy gameplay is welcome, but I don't see how that idea is a possible extension of the existing story. I don't mind the girl continuing in some fashion, like another Zaya. But not Garrett.

Then forget it, jtr.
Garrett is the very soul of Thief... He could easily be a part of future stories... It is FANTASY. Which means, of course, that anything can happen. Whether or not such endeavors are carried out masterfully is the real question, once again. Its the implementation of the idea that has failed, not the idea itself...

yuck, that nastiness is etched into my brain forever. The only thing with T coming out of them would be Turd :P
For anyone who thinks TDP/TMA > TDS, it's pretty much garuanteed that a T4 << TDS. The current state of the industry and marketing forces will simply not produce anything remotely close to what a T4 should be. It wouldn't even surprise me the least... no wait, I should say, I would expect it to be third person only, have pretty lame sound propagation and sensory systems etc. (things that would make a thief game miserable)
Shadak on 5/4/2008 at 00:28
It would be a lame joke if the game simply begins with "The..."
I hope it's Thief, but we probably have many months before any official announcements are made.

No need to act defeatist. And fans of T2X might also disagree that Garrett is necessary to tell a Thiefy story. Too many FMs out there, as well, that don't abide by the story template of the OMs, but are wished to be considered more than fanon. Garrett could be in the game, certainly, but if he breaks character without a damned good reason, FLAME ON! Garrett is Garrett, not how you or I place ourselves in his shoes. By giving him a voice, and a personality, and scenes to act in where we sit and watch, he became his own character in the story. We enjoy being placed in his shoes and making him do what we want, not what he would want.
We all know the truth, that how the player colours the gray areas, and fills in the perceived blanks, is how Thief empowers the player to feel they know Garrett, or become Garrett. It has little to do with the actual story of Garrett, as most arguments have proven to me. Hardly anyone notices what the games' media are actually conveying over the course of an entire game, let alone all three. It's how the entire sensory input of playing which blurs into an individual's singular emotional experience that people are responding to, and not much of the story.
Look at all the players that prefer to play Garrett as a sadistic bloodthirsty killer, while others avoid harming any AI they can. The game allows that, but the story is much less broad. I willfully try not to confuse the two, as a rule. This does not diminish my experience, nor does it mean I don't make crap up. The ideas I come up with are an attempt to NOT ignore anything, while filling in the blanks, as people will do. I know how I like to play the various missions, and I know when I'm overriding or ignoring the story with my tactics. I've found that playing the game distracts me from the story, because I have to act more to complete the mission, and savor/ingest less story. I have to keep moving to keep the story unfolding, which stays the same whether I observe it or not. No matter how I complete a mission, the Thief story remains unchanged, while my gameplay experience is different every time.
There are others still who played the games all the way through and couldn't tell you what the story was. Others still, didn't recognise the fact that each game shares the same story, that they are three parts of one whole.
If you mean gameplay, then say gameplay, if you mean story, then know the story. I say this so we can shape our arguments to each others' points of view. If you mean your personal favorite bit of story, then say you'd like to see that favorite bit expanded on, knowing that it's an extraction which ignores the rest of the story. I can agree with that and have no quarrel. Remembering one favorite scenario, while completely forgetting other plot points, and the whole point of said plot points, doesn't show the story much respect. You are respecting your gameplay experience. Again, gameplay vs. story. What all is actually said in the game vs. how much you perceived, ingested, and crafted for yourself that made it your very own.
