No, not another "will there be thief4" thread, but... - by Flux

Like I said, I don't have a problem with tools being available for a good reason. For Garrett to suddenly need a new tool, when the others worked fine, there better be a good reason in that world.
Gameworld reason: There are more complex locks now.
Gameplay reason: It's fun to have more of a challenge.
Mostly I'm talking about things that improve gameplay though.

A simpler compromise for this debate would be to have all the tools available on Normal, and mostly the better ones on Expert. Why would an Expert spend money on an inferior tool, unless he/she's feeling like horsing around, or is a miser? Your an Expert! Play the role and be an Expert!
Now this is back to front. No, it's just wrong. Everything should be just as available. Expert should just be harder, just like in T1 and 2.
Besides, I'm not suggesting inferior and superior tools, just different tools.

A replacement of tools rather than an addition? Sure. I've been toying with that throughout the thread. Then it really could be more of a challenge. I still don't see how caltrops would replace the usual tools, though.
Expert is more than just harder in the games, the available tools are different as well. Even if the pre-mission store has the same collection (it often doesn't) to choose from, the in-game power-ups are different or less available.

I can sort of buy the concept of a breath potion - but invisibility? Slow fall? There's this thing called physics. I know Thief is fantastical, but I like it to have some familiar groundings. Now if, instead of invisibility there was a flash bomb or something... oh wait.
(ps - I know Constantine was a bit all over the place on the laws of physics - but he's a special case)
Aren't arcs brilliant!!! Never understood why someone decided Fire and Gas Arrows shouldn't arc. T'other arrows in thief 1 & 2 are at least as satisfying as UT's Flak Cannon which is lots. Arcs rock. That's my ambition for T4 - that they stop making fire and gas arrows not arc. Also that the game is utterly new and exciting while still being Thief. Thankyou :D

Hahaha! Yeah. Although the invisibilty potion is pure stealth, while the flashbomb is assaulting an AI and letting them know you are there.
I think the lack of arcing was based on the notion that the lightness of the gas and plasma (fire) created neutral bouyancy. Or I could be just making that up! I am....:sly: Makes aiming the fire arrow at a zombie's torso easier.:p

I'm pretty anxious for an official announcement at this point, I wonder how long they'll wait now that the proverbial cat is out of the bag. Either way, we're probably looking at a late 2009 or 2010 release.

Um... hello?
Who uses a flashbomb on an unwary guard? Usually it is a means of escape *after* the Thief hath been spied out...
:)

Are you asking me if someone does that, or suggesting that no one should, but only making it sound like you don't know that people use it to knock a guard unconcious in a surprise attacK?:laff:
Suggesting it shouldn't happen I can more agree with.:) You understand the context of the comment you quoted, right, GD? :cheeky:
In my last post I meant to relate a story 'bout a guy who scaled the red brick universty building I worked in 8 years ago, but I had to fill up on apples, cheese, cucumbers, and deer legs first. Anyway, he went up the outside wall to crawl into a second story window, but he used only his fingers and toes. Once he got in, he unplugged the computer in that room, and carried it down and out the front door. Taffer! He got caught, and that's how they knew how he'd done it. People were leaving windows open all over that building, and I had to talk with the people on the first floor that were doing it. One woman asked me if leaving her window open an inch would constitute a security hazard. :tsktsk: Professors!
The player character could use a rubberband and paperclips to create a diversion, or put an eye out! Thanks for the inspiration, catbarf.

You don't use a flashbomb on an unsuspecting guard.
jtr7 on 11/4/2008 at 23:21
That's nice and clearly stated. I like it.
But...we both know it has to be an option. Oh, and is that only for human AIs?
A toast! To my fellow taffers! For love of the game!
