Is there some contest for the best reply with less than two words here at ttlg that I missed? :p
Oh, and I always wondered whether there could be some shiny stone in reality which shows you how deep the dark is you're hiding in by the amount of light it reflects.

I get crap for too many words AND too few!:laff:
And I don't think there's a stone that you could gauge actual light levels with better than your eyes alone.

You see, jtr has this lofty notion that someday, after he slips in enough unsuspecting *clinks*, he will catch up to ZylonBone'z post count. :p

Heh, many pages of crystal talk.
I can tell that "immersion" is that big happy word that likes to fly around here, and breaking the 3rd wall is usually seen as a no-no. To me, the light crystal broke the wall but for good reason. It's like a short, intuitive open letter to the player and if it was written in words it would say "look son! We programmed the shadows to matter."
Try playing games with stealth elements after Thief without a light indicator. Are the shadows really, really real? :o I see the light crystal as a quality seal, reinforcing the genre's levity and dare I say, the player's immersion.
Oh yeah, it's interesting to note that Silent Hunter III had it's own version of a visibility indicator, but it was more fun to see what you could get away with having it turned off since after all there were no shadows, only thousands of miles of water.

Yep. So my suggestion was to make it a part of the virtual world without changing its true function.:)
Welcome to the forums!
Goldmoon's run out of material! :o You should know better than to encourage me! :p
To no one in particular, since there's more than one....
---SIDEBAR 3---
I think of these boards as a virtual discussion. We can speak, or nod in agreement, or give a dirty look, or give speeches, without too many interruptions. Almost all of the interruptions occur in the reader's mind. My post style has a way of getting people to give themselves away, so I'm not tempted to stop. It's quite obvious when someone is only pretending to have read my posts, and when my posts are ignored, and I find it fascinating when these taffers try to argue against me using ideas I agree with them about. :laff: If they'd read my posts, they'd know I agree with them, and they could save their energy for the moments when I really do say something worthy of rebuke. I'm trying to be provocative in a positive way, to stimulate imagination, and not intending to provoke anyone to anger as a general course. But the brain-fevered taffers will continue to lash out at what they do not understand, or because of something they hate about themselves. If the trolls are free to fling poo, then I can post a smilie without having to type out a definition of the smilie, or adding the word "'Nuff said", or the like, after them. Can't read? Can't comprehend? Too lazy to take it all in? It shows. Post count? None of my concern. Apparently it's a hobby of some around here--watching others' post counts, I mean. :weird:

I don't mind either way really. I'm just happy that it's there and it does wonders at consolidating the gameplay. :cheeky:

Welcome to the forums!
Hooray! Thanks. I came down with a pretty nasty virus and so systematically played through some of my favourite games which were sitting on the shelf all neglected. I remembered how genius Thief really is and found this place.
It's amazing how active the fans still are around these games, but really I shouldn't be surprised because it
still gives me a buzz. When I've finished TMA I look forward to firing up some FMs.
As for the possibilities of a number four: Intuitively I'm convinced that it's happening. I think that the most important question now is, if there are design documents, how many zombies should I expect to be guarding them?

Hhhmmm..... :)
When you talk about Thief all passionate and stuff, I tune right in and extract all the goodness I can. When you start talking about yourself too much, I tend to shy away... After all, jtr, noone talks about jtr as much as jtr. :)
