Hi all. New poster, long time lurker. :)
I've been reading this thread, pages 1-6 and 21-26. Kinda skipped out the middle part. Lots of rumour and conjecture flying around about the possibility of Thief 4. Then I saw the post quoting a comment from someone at Eidos saying the medieval thing has been done to death. *Gasp* I sure hope they're not thing of making a 'Thief 2008', with Garrett wielding a Tec-9, anti-personal mines and some Q-like devices. Being the extraordinarily large Thief fan that I am, I find myself concerned about the Devs not taking the time to study the history and fan-base of the Thief franchise. I understand that they have games to sell and they have to consider marketing and all that capitalist stuff, but if they're going to turn Thief into some kind of modern monstrosity perhaps they should just call it something else altogether and leave Thief alone. Perhaps pass it on to someone like Bethesda, as someone here suggested.
I've been thinking, since I heard the Thief 4 rumour, that perhaps we the fans should compose a open letter to send to the Devs at Eidos Montreal, asking as nicely as possible if they would consider certain things when or if they make Thief 4. Things like; please don't try to modernise Thief for starters, please bring Garrett back, please please please bring back the rope arrow and roof tops, track down old LGS story-line Devs and seek their input, etc...though less pleading and annoying than that. Something that addresses the Devs respectfully, but puts forward what we think are important aspects of the Thief world. I have a giant list of things that I thought could use strengthening or changing from TDS, but I wouldn't want to just blurt it out at the Eidos Devs, have them be offended and then perhaps do the opposite out of spite. :erm:
Yeah, I know. They're professionals not spiteful kids, but never underestimate the petty mindedness potential of human beings. Anyway, this post is getting too long by half so I'll end with a question. Should such a letter be created and sent to the Eidos Devs? Assuming it hasn't already been proposed on page 7-20 of this thread. :cheeky:

That quote was from 4 years ago, and that guy no longer works with Eidos. Eidos is based out of Britain if I recall, and this development studio is in Montreal. Their Eidos in name, but lets wait to see what they can do before we start asking them to sell the rights to Bethesda...besides, that's hardly going to happen.
I also feel we should leave them alone, and not start writing letters demanding a million and one different things. If they're good at what they do, they'll produce a stunning game...if not, it will suck...and writing letters won't make a difference.
The best thing any production company can really do, is to go back to the source and find what worked and what didn't. They have 3 games to study...I'm sure they'll be able to figure out where things went wrong.

First, welcome!
Don't worry about that quote. It's a) really old, and b) spoken by someone who was and remains unimportant to Thief fans, mostly because c) he no longer works at Eidos. There is no reason to believe his statements were representative for any official Eidos line.

I really like the idea, but I think we'd better not do so at this time. For one, I suspect we'd have a hard time reaching a consensus wrt its contents. Secondly, we DON'T KNOW if there's a forthcoming Thief title, and waiting for an official statement - knowing what we're dealing with - would probably be more helpful. Lastly, if those French speaking dev taffers are worth their salt at all, they should be lurking these very forums already. Especially this thread.

I thought it was going to be a toolkit? Are you doing stock-vocals or is there something else being worked on?

It seems that many people are split between whether they want Garrett in a fourth. He's a great character but there isn't much which can be still done with him (see Alien: Resurrection (actually, don't)).

Quoted for likelihood! I've hung around on forums devoted to games years before they were released and have seen plenty of popular suggestions implemented.

That is really good to hear. Thief/James Bond isn't a game I'd look forward too.

Excellent point. It would be prudent to at least wait for some confirmation of Thief 4's development. In the mean time, I'm sure many Thief fans have, if not a wish list on features, an idea of what they felt was wrong with the last game, ie TDS, and what they would like to see in a follow up. Not to say I didn't enjoy TDS. I'm playing through it for the second time at the moment and it's a much better game than I first gave it credit for. Though I long for the days of rope arrows and being able to knockout flashbomb blinded foes. :D

Well, I haven't read as many posts on the topic as some, but from what I've read most people seem to want Garrett back. But that doesn't really matter. It was an example more than a request. It wouldn't be so bad not to have Garrett as the protagonist, as T2X showed us, but still I love Stephen Russell's vocal talents. I think a new Thief game would need his talents, even if not for Garrett. Benny, however, is a must. :joke:

Sure, I can understand that. No one wants pushy fans demanding certain features in a game they may be about to produce. Hopefully any such dev team would look at forums like this to get a feeling of what the fans feel are important features in the franchise. My fear is it may fall into the hands of a team who've been told,
'Make a quick X-Box game, and spare the artsie fartsie stuff. I want it on my desk by Monday'. I guess on open letter wouldn't change much if that were the case anyway. I just hoped that a directed fan based communication, not making demands but expressing ideas, might show the devs that we're not just a bunch of whiny kids and the Thief fan base is mature enough to be able to help keep Thief true to it's origins. TX2 was produced by fans. I think that says a lot about the quality of the Thief franchise and the value of people who have come to love it.
Of course, this is all just academic if it turns out that Eidos weren't talking about Thief when they dropped the 'T' hint.

Wow, damn, didn't realize this thing was 26 pages long... Tells ya how much I pay attention to that kinda stuff, lol.
Personally, I think a Thief 4 - if the feeling is kept mostly intact - would be a welcome change from the hum-drum crap I've been seeing for that past few months. So far, the only 2 things that interest me game-wise anymore (aside from the obvious classics) are GTA IV and Guild Wars. And even then, I bore rather quickly unless someone is there (besides my dad, who is worthless when it comes to doing anything except talking) to do something with, which is one of the reasons I like Guild Wars, because I can just go out and yell random obscenities at the crowd and watch the ensuing reaction.
Aah, human nature, how fun to exploit... :ebil:

Yep, it's a toolkit...so the AI will need barks right? :) "What was that?" All the usual stuff. I'm not talking about scripted conversations of course.

Any chance that we can get an update to the sticky thread about Thief 4 that lists the current info in this thread? It seems like this thread has a lot of what SHOULD be in Thief 4 as opposed to the likelihood of it being made and by whom. It would be nice just to have the sticky thread consolidate the news postings about it.
