I know someone who shifts everything to the right, as in ESDF in stead of WASD as he likes to have QAZ free for stuff. Personally, I need to be able to get Ctrl with my little finger, so didn't like it when I tried.

Strictly WASD setup.
C for crouch.
X for prone, or health items in games that use them.
F is usually flashlight; sometimes it may be use.
E is usually use, unless that's Mouse 2.
Q is often my grenade hotkey when tab is otherwise engaged.
G, sometimes H are drop/holster weapons.
V is usually night vision in games that use it.
Shift is walk, unless there is no walk function in which case it's sprint.
CTRL is always sprint.
Mouse 1 is shooting things.
Mouse 2 is use, unless it's altfire or melee.
Mouse 3 is melee or ADS, with ADS taking priority. I prefer to have it as a toggle, though, to ease strain.

WASD move
In games with lean, Q/E lean and F is use
In games without lean, E is use, F is flashlight, Q is last weapon
C for prone
Ctrl for crouch
Space jump
Shift sprint
G grenade
V melee
R reload
Mouse1 shoot, Mouse2 sights or alt fire.
Any other functions go where they fit.
I guess I'm pretty new-school when it comes to controls.

Joystick for movement (wasd) and abilities.
Trackball for aiming (just like a mouse).

http://www.ivorystorage.com/hardware/img/p/55-164-large.jpgThat joystick is awesome.
For 3 reasons.
1) It is indestructible. I need a new trackball every few years. Even when trackballs wears out less quick than mice. And I used to go through one joystick every 3-6 months. (I used to use Logitech Wingman joysticks). It was crazy. I got my CH Products Fighterstick USB somewhere in 2004. Been using it since. Nothing has broken yet.
2) The FighterStick USB has a lot of buttons. Trigger button, pinky button, button for your index finger. And 3 4-way hatswitches. Those are basically 3x 4 separate keys. I use the 8-way hatswitch as a 4-way hatswitch only (it's not sensitive/precise enough to use all 8 directions). In total there's 20 buttons I can use. A few years ago I started using the pinky-button as a "shift"-button. That means all other 19 buttons now have 2 functions. Giving me functionally 38-buttons. All usable while moving. Even when playing an MMO, being able to bind 38 abilities is more than enough.
3) Programmable. The stick comes with a driver and a utility to configure it. Very many easy and detailed ways to configure the stick. But the utility also holds a full-blown programming language ! I've written a script so I can play Unreal Tournament, and have real dodging. When I press the pinky button, the stick emulates dodging in the direction I am going. I can dodge forward quicker than any keyboard-player can. The programming language isn't very easy (not so intuitive). But you can do all kinds of stuff with it if you want. E.g. I asked for a way to check time in milliseconds inside your script, so I could fine-tune my dodging script on the millisecond !
I know the majority of gamers prefers keyboard+mouse.
But I have always thought there should be a better way to play games. True game-pads seem rubbish, because you don't have the fine aim from a mouse. But a trackball gives the same fine aim as a mouse. (If you're used to it, ofc. And don't use a trackball that you operate with your thumb). And a trackball is superior at circle-strafing. You never have to pick up your mouse.
I love my joystick. I think constant movement is easier with a joystick than with a keyboard. The only time when a keyboard is better is if you stand still a lot. Or have to move very precise. The joystick's dead-zone is less precise. Or you could enlarge the dead-zone, but then you have a longer time to start moving (you need to move the stick more).
There is one downside for me.
Joysticks only come in right-handed flavours. That means I need to operate the trackball with my left hand. That limits the amount of trackballs I can use. You are basically forced to use a symmetrical trackball (like my Marble Mouse). But I am right-handed. That means my aim with my left-hand is slightly worse than it would have been if I had used my right hand. I think this is no problem at all in MMOs or RPGs. And even in single-player shooters, my aim is still good enough to play FPS-games. However, if I was a serious online FPS player, than aiming with my left hand would always be a real handicap.

I don't know what the hell are you doing with them then. You do realize a mice is a mechanism so simple that it pretty much comes with a lifetime warranty?
And guess what's even more resistant than mice? A bloody keyboard.

2) The FighterStick USB
USB input devices are for baddies.
june gloom on 17/4/2012 at 06:25
What the fuck is this "baddies" shit? Is this the new terminology they use at 12chan or whatever the big pedochan is these days?
Also USB input > you
june gloom on 17/4/2012 at 09:43
Er, yes, inasmuch that .0000002 > .0000001. Who's bad now?
Koki on 17/4/2012 at 09:58
Since I am the one who cares about an imperceptible difference and you don't, I am ESPORT and you are BAD.
Obviously.
june gloom on 17/4/2012 at 10:00
So I'm a "baddie" because I'm not an insane 4chan reject with ludicrously high standards. Okay.
