 I'm a newbie user with a quick question.
Perhaps because I got used to doing so while playing Thief, I've been playing Deus Ex as a "sneaker" and using care to make all my takedowns non-lethal.
My question: is there any in-game point? I'm not talking about personal preference here, I'm talking about *in-game* rewards or punishments.
The non-lethal avenue is getting pretty darned difficult. Plus, it's hard to keep your composure when you get swarmed by five dudes with assault rifles -- my first instinct is to waste 'em all.
I'm still very early in the game, and my non-lethal approach does seem to ticking off Agent Navarre, but I'm wondering if there's really any point to it. I know I'm missing out on using some pretty cool weaponry, plus the stealth/nonlethal route takes a lot more time and planning to execute.
So is it worth it? Is there any benefit or drawback -- IN THE GAME ITSELF -- to either route? Or am I just worrying too much?
Any guidance would be appreciated.

I always play the statue mission using non-lethal weapons, but when I get to Castle Clinton, and have so many rifles and a flame thrower coming at me, I figure the time for all non-lethal is over. I may be wrong, but I don't think there is any penalty for switching to shotgun/rifle at this point.
The prod and crossbow continue to be very useful, anytime you need to take down a target silently. And the challenge of using them is fun. But I think if you try to play the game using only them, you may run short of ammunition. Prod ammo can be scarce in places.

*Minor Spoilers within*
I can't remember every detail but you do get different dialogue with Paul if you go for the shoot first approach at the statue as opposed to just avoiding or stunning the NSF. As you mentioned, Navarre also gets annoyed if you don't use force on that mission but more so on the Castle Clinton mission. However, here the actual difference in reactions you get from the key players is more to do with the way you enter the terrorists' hideout. Even if you stun or avoid every NSF terrorist but go in the front way, you still get the lecture off Sam Carter and congratulations from Anna. Whereas using the back entrance and wasting every last guard is fine. ;)
Since you've only got a short way into the game I don't want to give too much else away. The best way to find this stuff out is of course to play it through twice using different methods the second time around. Anyway, the short answer to your question is "yes" there are in-game differences if you use a non-lethal approach but I'd hardly call them rewards or punishments. In addition, these all but disappear the further you get into the game as the difficulty increases.
If you want a reprimand, just go in the Ladies toilets at UNATCO! ;)

You don't need to use the prod in many cases. If you can take an enemy by surprise just hit their back with the baton, one hit takes 'em out. This is especially useful on the first mission, where prod chargers are scarce.
And non-lethal methods do have their advantages: they're completely silent (even 'silenced' lethal methods cause death screams that can alert guards), and you don't have to hide the bodies, since unconscious 'corpses' are apparently invisible to AI.

 Yes, I did get the "going into the women's washroom is unprofessional" reprimand. What a laugh!
But hey, I was just scouting the complex. And I did knock, I think...
I mean, come on, it's not like I killed someone... at least not right then...
So, the general consensus seems to be that I'm being overcutious? So I can start wasting people?

IMO,playing the entire game nonlethally (except for the very few cases where you must kill, and those will be obvious when the time comes, so don't worry) is a challenge for experts. It's similar to the challenge of playing the Thief games on expert.
You can do it to challenge yourself - and actually, if you can handle 5 troops nonlethally, you're pretty good! - but if you play "in character" as I like to do, then you'll do what seems right in each situation. If you are very lethal, or very nonlethal, or take certain approaches, the characters will react differently to you.
Generally, my approach is to consider the lives of civilians - if I have to be noisy or lethal in order to be quick so that a civilian doesn't die, then that's what I do. If, on the other hand, I need to keep civilians out of any crossfire, I sneak up and do silent knockouts/takedowns. But that's me.
One of the really cool points of this game is that your methods and approaches are up to you. Enjoy - and don't worry about a sudden MISSION FAILED screen because you did something "wrong" - that's not going to happen in this game unless you die.

Don't be so scare to kill or not to kill, it is only a game. I am not talking about the attitude towards real world and games, the answer to your question should be found out by yourself. The fun of exploring the game in different ways or styles make the game more worthwile. Trust me, Deus Ex tries its best to provide different results to your actions, however it is only a game, there are not enough combinations to serve everything. You won't get very different treatment from your decisions. The major plot goes on no matter what you do.

Anyone else who thinks it is easier to sneak your way past enemies on Liberty Island, than it is in the stealth-training?

Thanks for covering up that classified information, man. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone--your secret's safe with me.
