@Judith:
Is it that the scene is badly done or is it already a dealbreaker for you that a dog dies?

Isn't the fact that you don't have ownership of what happens there part of the point? I mean, it's definitely not a great opening gambit and fizzles out in the sense of any larger meaning beyond 'daddy was an asshole' for the rest of the game, but feeling constrained and helpless in the face of it was definitely the idea.

No, it's not a dealbreaker, although it got me annoyed that I can't refuse to pull the trigger, because the game will not advance otherwise. Dad was never portrayed beyond stereotype and at least in the first scene he reacted when I didn't throw a vase at him. Also the later scene with frau Engel, her daughter, and the prisoners: that stuff is all over the place. Wolf I got the formula right, where super serious stuff mixes well with wacky over-the-top action. Here it's too much of everything at once, decapitation in one second, a comedy dialogue and making fun of a clumsy fat girl in the next, etc. All this with BJ being gruffy world-weary character at the end of his life - it doesn't hold well, and it makes me think what made the first game good was a happy accident, rather than a conscious effort.

#NowPlaying Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.
I must say that I am hugely disappointed. The first three games were awesome.

I never played that one due to the 3rd-party DRM. Glad to know I didn't miss much.

As a puzzle platformer (of sorts), I thought the game was decent but forgettable. It felt a bit like a level pack for the original Sands of Time: uninspired but a reasonably fun way of spending a few hours.
Apparently there were completely different versions of The Forgotten Sands, but I don't remember which versions were different from which other ones. Possibly it was the Wii version that was entirely different.

I got home after a week on holiday and don’t actually feel like I’ve missed games, but I did get started on
Gravity Rush 2, which has a slow start but otherwise is as charming as the first game. I also played about ten minutes of
The Bard’s Tale (the remaster that just came out) and the nostalgia was weapons-grade strong. I’d played games before
The Bard’s Tale (I originally only played the third), but it was my gateway drug into RPGs and games that really grabbed hold of my imagination. Nonetheless, I’m not sure how much I’ll play of the remasters; the gameplay is pretty basic and these days I prefer more narrative RPGs with more interesting worlds.
God yes, the nostalgia factor is high with this game. Bard's Tale was the first game I ever sunk long hours into, and was the start of my love of first-person games with exploration. It is very repetitive, though they've made some changes with the remaster that make it less grindy. In particular, the XP required to level up has been cut in half for each level. I'm in Harkyn's Castle now and I'm still enjoying it. It is pretty basic compared to more modern games, for sure, but I'll finish it and then probably go back to Horde Mode in Arizona Sunshine (which I find incredibly viscerally satisfying), at least until they release Bard's Tale 2 remastered. I never played that one when it was first out.

There were FOUR different versions. PC/XB360/PS3 was the same but the Wii, PSP, and Nintendo DS versions were all different. Here's a good video on it:

Actually Matt McMuscles' whole youtube series on (
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJdyZRNyk92pGBC3vLgB3OzmtDnzG8wcu) the history of the Prince of Persia games is good. There's a lot more of these games than I had any idea existed. Of course I know of, and have played all the mainline games (except the mid-90's PoP 3D), but there's a bazilion spin-offs as well.

This. I enjoyed it well enough, but there wasn't much that made it stand out.
Particularly given that it was advertised as the game that would explain how the prince turned from the guy in Sands of Time to the asshole in Warrior Within when... it did nothing of the sort.

You can
intentionally miss the shot though. Dad gets mad and does it anyways, but it's not your act.
On the topic of the Forgotten Sands: I liked it more than the 2008 Prince of Persia, for what that's worth. I also liked it quite a bit more than Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which I had picked up around the same time. Maybe not something to play immediately after other games in the series, but I liked it for what it was, and enjoyed it when I did get to it.
