The Neverending Story is still one of my favourite books - even when I reread it as an adult it absolutely held up - so I'm a total snob about the film and the decisions it takes that completely go against the book's themes. Which I can say with 100% certainty in spite of never having seen the film.
The first movie is (as far as I remember) an ok film adaptation of the first part of the book (with some notable changes) that tries to keep as much as they can fit into the runtime, the second movie tries to adapt the second part of the book and fails. I've only read & watched reviews of the third movie...
What doesn't fail is (

Just finished "Curse of the Pharaohs". It had its high points (no pun intended), but the ending was rather anticlimactic. Which is true for most Assassin's Creed games, except perhaps AC2 (and possibly Brotherhood). Anyway, I got 80 hours out of the game and enjoyed most of them, but I'm all AssCreeded out for now. Bye, Bayek.

Man, dragon's dogma has a truly wretched opening 20hrs. And yet I've read too many claims that the late game is great to call it quits...

The early stages may be slow going, but once you open up the world and get some skills things become better and better. Class and gear for both you and your pawn can matter a lot, but don't expect much variety until you're a good deal into the main story in the capital. Also, the expansion content (Dark Arisen) can be accidentially accessed early on when someone new to the game would die over and over to the basic enemies in that area.
But there are some really fun fights to be had once you get the hang of the game and have progressed far enough.

Well I don't know about that. I'd say the part of Dragon's Dogma I enjoyed most was the first few hours, fighting huge monsters and getting caught in the dark, before the game started dragging on with
too much fucking walking back and forth to the city. I'd say if you hated the first 20 hours there's nothing in the late game that's gonna turn you around. The final boss battle is pretty epic, but not worth dragging yourself through a game you hate for.

Okay, I lied. I'm not taking a break from Assassin's Creed. Instead, I'm revisiting Unity, though mainly as a tourist - I want to check out its world without running everywhere and seeing the minimal rather than Paris itself. Not sure I'll play all that much of it, but in the half hour or so that I just played I definitely got a kick out of slowing myself down and just enjoying the sights. The engine has some issues especially with LOD - higher detail levels pop in very close to the player in particular - but lighting and materials are still gorgeous.

Yeah, AC:Unity's pre-baked shadows were put to great use, but at the cost of a dynamic day/night cycle. It's a game I want to get back to primarily because of how beautifully rendered its Paris is. AC:Origins also does great things with its dynamic lighting system, even if the shadows and GI may not have the same quality as Unity's solution (to be honest, I haven't peered closely enough to tell; at a glance, the things that stand out as different in AC:O and AC:U are mostly art direction-related for me).

Well, I'm pretty committed to this review thread. But yeah, the backtracking is very grindy and annoying. I will say that fighting huge monsters has finally become fun, though - it was just tedious at the start for me.

As I said in your review thread, you have to put a lot of time in to Dragon's Dogma to get to the really juicy stuff. And even after "completing" the main campaign, you'll have the Dark Arisen content to do, which is where the real challenge of your skills begins.
It may be worth friending some of the more ardent Dragon's Dogma fans around here on Steam to get access to their high level pawns. You're welcome to send an invite my way for example, and my pawn's completely maxed out.

Awesome, thanks! Invite sent.
