OpenGL is valuable for its cross-platform capabilities- and Carmack, being the insufferable nerd he is, insists on catering to the Linux crowd who don't play games anyway.

Id Software writes everything themselves, not relying upon third party middleware. That way they can release the source code for their games after so many years and we can thank them for that.

I'd actually rather have all games made with OpenGL, even if it is a bit shit, since then we wouldn't be dependent on Microsoft and Windows for gaming, and wouldn't have to deal with MS telling us that we have to buy their new OS if we want the new DirectX.
OpenGL has the moral high ground over DirectX, but unfortunately DX has better functionality and far far far more users.
