Here is an odd development. Copying all the files and folders from my Dromed folder that are needed for a mission zip made the word steak show up in-game when I played the new zip in FMSel.
Later on though, if I can't fix those other two little niggles I mentioned, I would still like to send you a link.

are you using dromed with fmsel enabled? you should be, so that it knows to look in your fm's folder for resource files.
if you do not have fmsel enabled with dromed, or you had not selected your fm when launching dromed, that would explain why it could not find objnames.str!

I have a separate T2 install just for Dromed. I guess it's just a leftover habit from Darkloader days.
The Dromed I run to look at FM's is in my T2 install is in C:\Thief 2 The Metal Age.
The Dromed I run for my own building is in my T2 install in C:\Games\Thief 2 The Metal Age

a separate thief install for dromed is a good idea! but you should still use fmsel with it, with the fm path set to a folder, and inside that, one folder for each of your fms. that way all the resource files for your fm—the mis and gam, obviously, and all custom objects, textures, books, and other necessary files (like objnames.str) all go in subfolders of that fm's folder.
that way you keep customised resources out of your thief folder (keeping it nice and clean). and packaging your fm is little more than zipping up that fm's folder.

Good point.
