How about making a list of the kind of goals that could be implemented into levels! (Other than the usual game goals of getting from a -> b, and shoot enemy X.)
Some to start the list.
Get from a -> b (find the exit, the escape-pod etc.)
Kill enemy X (Shooting the end of game "boss").
Protect ally Y (Protecting scientists as they escape from prison).
Chase / find a moving target (many Grand Theft Auto missions).

Gee, that sounds like some of the objectives in Thief (Cragscleft) and Thief 2 (Kidnap).

I would like to see a bigger role given to dialogue and character interaction - what you say (and do not say) to certain people, how you interact with them - has as much impact on the unfolding of the plot as does more direct forms of action. Planescape: Torment is an excellent example of how dialogue can drive a game (it needn't be as wordy as P:T, of course).
We always hear about the nifty advances in 3D rendering or sound implementation; what I would love to hear more about is how they are advancing the AI, and other subsets of that, scripting, character interaction, and so forth.
