An open world game like Skyrim can easily bring on obsession for me, because the world is so big and there's so much to do, all in this gorgeous, captivating setting. It's like you'd rather be there than ordinary everyday life. Kind of matrix-esque. You know it's bad when you play for 8-10 hours straight, and then it all creeps into your dreams too.
Also, Don't Starve. Can't really explain it. I'd be looking up new strategies and memorizing recipes and gameplanning at work just so when I got home I'd be all prepared for a marathon session. I'd go so far as create an outline for what I want to accomplish and in what order. Kind of embarrassing to admit, but it illustrates the point.

Remove the last 4 sentences and it sounds like advice for lengthy gaming sessions.

Used to happen a lot more. Alpha Centauri, HoMM, MtG Shandalar, X-COM, Thief... so many hours. Never could get into MMORPGs but I did play a couple of MUDs pretty heavily. Oh, and I can sometimes still lose all sense of time with Nethack, even though it's so old. From recent ones there's Binding of Isaac, Dark Souls, Desktop Dungeons.
