I ordered a Rift, and it will arrive tomorrow. I can't do any development work for a week or so (waiting for new PC parts), but as soon as I can, I'd love to do what I can to add support.
So, I ask, what exactly is the situation with the source code? Who is currently maintaining these VC2008-made builds? If the legal situation is still murky regarding a public source release, would the current maintainer be willing to work with me to add support?

Since both Thief 1/2 can be played in 3D, I believe it should be possible to play Thief in 3D with the Oculus Rift.
These instructions may be useful.

The situation is the same as it has been for years now: there is no officially sanctioned source available, any consideration of source release is alleged to be wandering aimlessly through the Lawyer Wastes of Eidos in the land of Squeenix and it's anybody's guess whether anything will ever make it out of there (if it hasn't died already), and we have no idea who is responsible for the NewDark builds beyond the username 'Le Corbeau' on the french "ariane4ever" forum. Whoever that is appears to be in no rush to identify themselves more openly.

Would you also consider trying the same for The Dark Mod? I don't know whether the mod makers would be interested in this, but it might be more feasible with an engine that (I believe) has already worked with the OR in the shape of Doom 3.

No offense intended to the OP, but I seriously doubt that Le Corbeau is going to reveal themselves to a person who first registered on the forums this month.

Yeah, this has all (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140741&page=2) been discussed before. And I'm sure the TDM developers would love to see Oculus support, provided they get someone who knows how to program that stuff for ID Tech 4, or a talented member handles it themselves. Only time will tell, though.
Ah, neat! Still, Thief 1 and 2 in particular would be PERFECT for more "specialized" stereoscopy. Imagine being blind in the right for the rest of T1 starting with Escape!, or still seeing your surroundings in the left when using the remote eye thing.

I'd rather see more support for a source release petition than bringing Russel back. For all we know, he could have been the first guy they approached and he turned the role down. Besides, we all know NuThief is gonna suck anyway, why get worked up over a game not worth recognizing?
Also, what is it with lawyers not understanding the nature of source code, especially that to old games? I know they're into law and not tech, but come on, you really think Squeenix will lose anything if they release it? It's not game assets, and it's not viable for modern development.
I don't think it's a hopeless endevor, and is certainly one of actual importance. I remember when the Doom community was pushing for Activision's lawyers to GPL the Heretic/Hexen code, and they eventually budged after they finally understood the nature of old source. Even the original coders tried convincing them! Took a while for it to get through their heads, but they eventually did come to realize the harmlessness of it.
I realize Sqeenix has completely different (and possibly even more hardheaded) lawyers, but it's worth a shot. I think Squeenix would be more willing to give us what we want if we are not seen as annoyances to be ignored in their eyes.
I'm not trying to insult anyone who supports the petition, or those who contact Sqeenix directly, but I wish to express that I think it's counterproductive and that you may wish to reconsider petition priorities. Dark engine source is far more valuable to all of us than getting back a voice in a game most of us won't even play.

No offense taken, I know he's gotta be very cautious. I do intend to become more active and try making some FMs.

I could give it a shot.
While BFG edition may be Doom 3 on the outside, it's almost entirely rewritten. Also, the official Oculus support was for an old hardware revision. Fans have managed to update it to the current hardware revision, thankfully. It shouldn't be
too difficult to get it in the original idTech4.

Okay.

That's the point. It makes YOU Garret. You suffer his trials as he suffers them. It should be optional, of course. I understand that not everyone would like it, or even be able to use it if they have weak vision in the left eye. It's not all bad, your brain gets used to seeing if one is seeing all black. Yeah, your nose kinda blocks some things, but thanks to head tracking, you can easily tilt your head a few degrees to the right, and keep your full 90 degrees of situational awareness.
Maybe a little retcon for a VR version of the game could be the keepers giving him his mechanical eye, delivering it from Karras after having analyzing it and determining it to be harmless and not rigged. That way, Garret could keep his stereo vision.
Also, what if there were some revised TG/TDP maps, turning the game into a 100% T2 compatible campaign? Mix Gold with the original Dark project maps. Colorize the lighting in 32-bit, and recompile T2's lights in 32-bit.
Maybe even have it flow right into Unwelcome Guests, and then commercial T2, perhaps even the fanmade T2 Gold maps in there? Then maybe TDS without taffing
glowing footsteps or horribly voice acted fences. "Heiyyy, Garret... Where'd ya git the lewt? Nevahminddd... Nonna mah bizzznizzsss...." So, turn TDS into what it should have been: something with more freedom, depth rather than volume, and no taffing handholding.
Keep the Gold story revisions and new content except in certain cases that breaks atmosphere (e.g. Lost City mages), but have the overall feel remain that of TDP (I feel that some of Gold's revisions slightly change the tone and atmosphere of the game).
Lost City should certainly stay lost, no mages, please, just a total atmosphere killer. Bonehoard should have no annoying Fireshadow, perhaps a fireplace enchanted with dark magic that spawns fire crystals at the same rate as the fireshadows spawn? The crystals should only spawn if there are no more fire crystals in either the player's inventory, or the map. If there are any available, the fire should stay unlit until the proper conditions are met.
Oh, and perhaps post-processing effects and realtime shadows? I wish such a Thief game existed. Am I alone on this, or would that be a cool "definitive Thief"?

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733) what if indeed. full conversion is a copyright breach though (if memory serves), so that is not happening (would also serve no purpose whatsoever, as currently, we are already running T1/TG in NewDark, an enhanced T2 engine). also note that there are no plans for removing the mages and fireshadows. the 32bit relight will have to wait as well - this is a tricky thing, and requires a LOT of testing.

I already knew about TFix. I wasn't saying that should be revised. I was speaking of a project idea of mine.
The lighting is still gray scale, and it uses T1's physics quirks (such as l ethal bunnyhopping). I intend to mix TDP and Gold map elements, and to colorize the lightmap. The base game would be full T2, therefore physics would work as they do there.
If ever distributed, the installer would use an encrypted patch for the original files to ensure that you own both TDP and Gold (considering them separately to be on the safe side).
The end user would still need full T2 to make any use of the resulting patched original files, since they would be a mod extending the base game, and therefore dependent on T2's assets.
TDS would be quite a task to remake in Dark. I just want to focus on making my own personalized T1 for now.
