I linked to an article about that a few posts up.
A summary: A Dad hacked the ROM for his daughter when she asked if Pauline was a playable character.

that's adorable and totally unrelated to feminism and jay petite's post accompanying the video now takes the lead for worst post of the year 2013

Maybe not. That kid was pointing out exactly the sort of thing that Sarkeesian video was talking about -- why is it always the dude who's rescuing the chick? She's too little for gender politics, but she's not too old to notice the obvious.
The result of that is a better response to the Damsel in Distress trope than Sarkeesian's 22 minutes of fumbling about the issue could hope to achieve.

Games have an overabundance of male protaganists and damsels in distress because the industry was founded by and mostly run by men who create(d) games for other men.
Holy shit, I managed to put that up there without spending $100k or 23 minutes rambling about shit everyone already knows.
I feel like if you want to support women's equality you'd be better off supporting someone like Rinry or something.

I think the issue is more highlighting that this is a problem, because there are a lot of people who seem to think that it is either just as unfair to men or perfectly harmless.

Also, I'm a guy and I'm bored with the general lack of quality on how female characters are written. Yes, men don't fare much better in the quality department, but at least they're not relegated to objects as often and to the same extent.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
Think about it!!!111
