Considering that she's a feminist without a cause, I'd expect to be disappointed.
Care to make sense of that?
Jason Moyer on 14/3/2013 at 11:35
She's not interested in examining the way gender roles are represented in videogames, she's trying to advance her personal agenda.
Thirith on 14/3/2013 at 11:40
I'd say she's doing both, and there's nothing wrong with that - unless you're using Repub speak in which "advancing an agenda" is always dubious to begin with.
Anyway, care to tell me what her agenda is?
PigLick on 14/3/2013 at 12:31
I think her agenda is "holy shit I better come up with something cos i made a shit ton of money"
thats all it is, probly had some vague idea about it, then the kickstarter forced the hand.

The discussion that she has stimulated all over has had a good effect though. I've seen many a discussion all over the internets where the status quo has more or less ended up as being "admit that there is a problem with female representation in gaming media, or look like a massive douche to everyone watching", which is how cultural shifts begin. Happened with racism, homophobia etc... Something becomes a social taboo as a result of a nucleation event and people who are still discovering who they are and developing as individuals will become affected by the new gradient of social norms.

Making a pile of shitty videos so everyone thinks she's the bestest feminist evar.
I mean, are you fucking kidding? She's doing what everyone with an opinion and no critical thinking skills does - starting with the conclusion (women are misrepresented in videogames) and then working her way back from that. Where an interesting, thought-provoking discussion would start with "here is how gender roles are portrayed in videogames" and then BOOM everyone craps their pants when we realize women have been portrayed poorly. Or maybe she comes to an entirely different conclusion because, fuck, Science!

I do wonder if this can even happen at all.
Jason Moyer on 15/3/2013 at 09:13
Well, there's also an argument to be made that being portrayed differently doesn't necessarily mean being portrayed poorly. Sometimes people assume that acknowledging the differences between men and women is the same thing as saying that one gender is inferior to the other.
Thirith on 15/3/2013 at 09:55
So you're saying that women don't tend to be relegated to the role of object much ore often than men? Or that this is just in keeping with natural differences between men and women? You don't agree that at least some - and quite possibly a considerable part - of the differences are cultural rather than based on biology?
