Uhh. Oh dear.
How offical is official in this case, really? It smacks of a licensing deal, of course, as nearly all hint books have been for some time, but... ISBN please?

Thanks! I'm guessing that the Viktoria painting is concept art.

I rather think they hired some artist to draw images inspired by the game...like the fan-made artworks on TtC.
@Magpie: Official German one, with an Eidos logo on it. Of course made by some little studio, but co-written by the German localisation manager. As I said, they may not be perfect in a way of representing the most "thievy" way of playing the missions or reflecting the atmosphere in the short texts, but they are made with love (I guess) and even contain bonus material.

Or an in-house illustrator, if they would have one.

You know, I'd say that makes it pretty darn official by modern standards...
That means they had access to a lot of the assets produced by LGS which weren't shipped with the game. The clocktower picture was of course first published on the TDP flip-cover box, but I don't know if it ever has been seen elsewhere (and without an overlay of screenshots and cover blurbs) but in your book. You should take really good care of it. ;)

That's a really sympathetic trait, actually.
I love that you had scanned one of the Viktoria illos from the TMA book. I'm sure we'd appreciate seeing the rest as well, regardless of, hm, taste. A hi-res movie still would be magnificient, for instance.

Considering that all the movie screenshots and even the maps are higher-res than the files shipped with the game, I'd have to upload so many things that I fear for the evil copyright (same thing a everywhere: publishing, even in parts... etc.). But I have one from the TDP and from the TMA guide which show one City artwork used later for a TMA desktop wallpaper, where they chopped the right border (left), and one containing two movie scenes from TDP (the smithy from the outro movie and the first image from the cutscene where Viktoria takes Garrett to Constantine, plus an Artemus from TMA):

The scanner is still offline at the moment, so some of the additional artworks will be scanned later.

Not in-house, but anyway I (
http://www.franzmiklis.com/index.html) found him. His TMA works are not included, but they are of course less spacy. (

Very nice! So we're looking at the full paintings on the canvases? I wonder what the significance of the "842" and "842" is about. I still can't make out what it supposed to say under the "HIGH PRESSURE" on the tank.:p

I hear you.
Well, at least try to make yourself some high quality scans and keep them on the Net as a private digital backup of the artwork in the book. That's still legal in the EU, I believe.

I think they do. Not from the exact same angle, though. And with a year in between, no?
Note the upgraded chimney. The staircase. The shape of the boiler. And the number.
I think it'd help to think of these paintings (and a lot of other Thief documents) not as photos, but as artist's interpretations.
Oh, I can see why he was hired for the job. Absolutely. Maybe he just didn't play the games before accepting the commission?

Haha, Beleg's ownership of this guide begat quite a stir over in (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119918) this other thread tonight.
Specter posted an interesting link to the very guide we're discussing here:
(
http://www.eidos.de/gss/legacy/loebu/index.html?id=20)
And it's got tasters! Four double pages in PDF. Got to love that the guide spends two pages for A Keeper's Training, too. And... larger versions of the pixelated weapons pictures found in the regular manual. Wow. Never saw that before. Hm. Two water arrow crystals. No noisemakers. Funny moss and rope arrows. I believe this art must be from earlier designs. (
http://www.eidos.de/gss/legacy/loebu/pages/thief1_2.pdf) Have a look. Anyway, I certainly take back my earlier questioning of the officialness of this guide.
BTW, Jason, what's up with that Keeper weapon master Duhnkeros? :weird:
(Probably the guy fighting Garrett in the paved courtyard in the Keeper Compound, don't you think?)

a carving or something with a hand holding a hammer.
My guess is that it's identical to the one found in the manual. See the PDF (
http://support.eidosinteractive.com/index.php?_m=downloads&_a=viewdownload&downloaditemid=218&nav=0,255,226) downloadable from Eidos. Hm, I guess one could extract that background image for separate use in FMs or whatever. I can't recall seeing the picture anywhere outside the manuals.
Well spotted. This hasn't been used elsewhere either, has it?
Re: Duhnkeros - Makes me wonder how many other small infobits are scattered around those guides. =)
