It is the same picture. I'm still not fully convinced that it's a rendered model, I suspect it might just be a regular painting, just more naturalistic and PhotoShopped than usual. It does look kind of rendered, I'll grant that, but the large version from the guidebook doesn't.
Have a look at the French TDP site here:

(And notice how the fan-made Thief font actually was quite a bit off WRT the original.)

Yeah, it's definitely a painting, which is why I'm wondering why it's labelled "statue". Maybe it was made for the 3D modeler to reference. To me, the oddest part of the painting is the hands. They are posed like action-figure hands, and the rope looks laid over the fingers, like Garrett's not really holding it.
Haha! The "E" is still classic Thief!:cheeky:

I guess I should have added the underlined part:

It is named Statue04 because all the other pictures with this 3D model of Garrett [...] have also [been named] Statue [by me].
So, it's just because it looks like one. By the way, the TDP guide features also the one with Garrett hanging on a rope with the crossbow ready while the background is a heavily stretched and slightly changed version of the left picture that Magpie quoted above.

Hey, the emphasis really helps!:thumb:
Sorry 'bout that, Beleg.:( We are quite enjoying this. :D

Yes, we sure are.
So... what was its original form? Statuette concept art, the painting, or a 3D mesh? Because the angle in the version I linked is distinctly different from the one in the Strategy Guide, so it
is reasonable to assume that it has existed as more than just a painting.
What came before? This (

http://www.darktales.gamers.de/00000095a9128f216/0000009a5010d1001/index.html) artwork page, or did a physical model made from clay come first? Or was it the painting?
(To paint a pre-rendered model? I don't think I've ever encountered that technique before. Mysterious.)

It may have been painted instead of sculpted as a maquette. It may have been a money issue, or lack of a decent sculptor. Just something for the 3D modeler to get a feel for Garrett with. But of course, I'm filling in the blank, there.:cheeky:

I've got the TDS guide now. From what I can tell after quickly rushing through the pages, there are two completely new images: The one I posted above and a tiny little Kurshok drawing, which is however not so different from the ingame modell so I don't think it's that awesome artwork that Krypt mentioned some time ago. There are extended versions of e.g. the Seaside Manor artwork and the desktop wallpaper showing Garrett who grabs through some strange metal work. I'll see if I can make little postcards for you during the week.
