I have to say, between Krypt and MysteryDev, Thief 4 actually sounded pretty neat. The concept art is cool. Garrett seems pretty neat - the hood is a great touch. Although everytime I look at that gun in his hand.. well.. it just seems WRONG. The bag makes sense though. Finally somewhere to put the loot :laff:

I do wonder how they planned on differentiating it from Splinter Cell. Even if it wasn't so dependant on gadgets and the storyline wasn't based on the whole spy/terrorism thing, the core idea would still be mighty similar.

Hmm, I just don't see the need for it really. Taking thief into a modern setting is just making it more and more like everything else out there. Sure, the gameplay might be similar, but I really don't believe you could convey the same type of Character within a modern setting. This modern Garrett is nothing more than another thug. It's more difficult to convey the same type of nobility in character within a modern setting.

It definatly wouldn't be neccecary. I'm just saying that when I first heard that the original plans for Thief 4 were to put it in modern times, I thought it was the worst idea ever. But the comments of the two devs have warmed me up to the possibility of it not being complete trash.
Still, I do agree that putting it in modern times would make it more like other titles, and I would much rather see a Thief 4 set in the same time frame. I don't really think yo ucan properly call the modern Garrett a 'thug' though, seeing as how the only thing we know is what the pre-production art made him look like. After all, if he spent day to day lurking in the shadows, stealing from fat businessmen, how would that make him any different then our beloved Garrett?

It's the time frame. When you put his character type into the past, the lines of what is right and wrong are blurred more, but in a modern setting...it's too close to home...and society has pretty strong conceptions of what a criminal is in the here and now. At least in the past, it never really feels like you are a true criminal, within a modern setting, you can't really avoid the fact that...this IS about committing crimes. Especially when the concept art displays a gun in his hand. It would just be turning the series towards the same immature themes so many games already force us to endure if we ever want to game at all. In my mind, this isn't bad ass...it's skank ass. It would tarnish the legacy of a wonderful series.

Unlike everyone else I never really thought of the original Thief as set in the past or in medieval times. It was set in a completely different world, with technology that was both behind and ahead of ours (robots!). It's not so much changing the time frame as it is changing the world. Who's to say that the future of the Thief world would be anything like our world?
New Horizon on 19/3/2006 at 03:32
It wasn't set in our past...but it would be set in the past of it's own world if a future version was made. There were plenty of parallels to our own world in the original games. They took place in a reality that was inspired by our own worlds history and myths....so it wasn't completely different in all honesty. Obviously a future version of that world is still going to be pretty close to ours. The intent was to bring it into a future version of the Thief world, but it's equally obvious that it would still be an exagerated version of our own modern world.

Exactly right, and New Horizon, I think there's the error in your thinking. You think that setting Thief in a future era would mean it'd be like our world right now. That doesn't have to be true. The Thief world obviously wouldn't devlop quite like our own, and it could be quite different from the world around us right now.

Okay guys, I'm all for wishing for the best but...I don't really see how it can be considered an error in thinking when what has been presented to us points to a 'modernized' version of the Thief world, that so far sounds pretty much like our own, but with touches of the past Thief world in it. You are aware that our world is the template upon which the Thief world is based right? Yes, there is a mixture of magic and technology within a medieval styled setting, but it's still primarily recognizable as an earthlike world. It's not THAT different from our own. The concept art was said to have been a representation of the
direction they were going, right? Well, it appears pretty obvious that the world must have been developing in ways similar to our own...especially with the 'cool' outfit and pistol. :laff: There is always wishful thinking, but I really think it's pretty obvious that it was going to reflect our own world in order to appeal to an even broader mainstream audience. Anyway, that's all I'm going to say on the matter, because 'hopefully', we'll never know.
