The picture posted by Greanjeanz is indeed the only known picture of Stephen Russell. He does stage acting as well as voice acting.
Still, I nearly died laughing at Naartjie's and Gingerbread Man's little jokes. Even if they were true, they would still be hilarious.
Facist, the cutscenes in Thief are animated. I think you know this but I am saying it just in case you are serious.

always animated. When Garrett and Constantine first meet for instance. And the screenshot in Taffer_Boy_Elvis' post above shows Garrett played by some real person.

uhm I just uploaded a 900kb mp3 file of the german voice for garrett (
ftp://200.61.166.164/t1voicetest.mp3) on the following ftp just for those who are interested...I took it from the intro to the first level...I...erm....sort of "borrowed" this ftp so I doesn't know how long this file will exist on it.....
I hope something like this didn't get posted already....anyway a short note to the voice acting of the german thief --> it's great! yup it is....if you don't believe me then get the proof, right away.... :)

I didn't know that the silhouettes in the cutscenes were real. The people it shows in detail, however, such as Constantine and Viktoria, are animated. And it's damn good animation, at that. I wonder if Garrett is animated or not in the Return to the Cathedral cutscene.

I've got the English version of Thief Gold and the German one of Thief: The Metal Age, and I agree with seph[x]. German versions of games tend to have terrible voice acting, like Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights. But the German voice actor for Garrett in Thief 2 has quite a similar voice as Steven Russel and manages to sound just as cynical as the English counterpart. But not only the main character is well dubbed, they chose professional voice actors for everybody else, too. E.g. the four arguing guards in Life of the Party are just as hilarious.
The only small criticism I have: They forgot to dub a sentence of a peasant woman complaining about the filthy air. Sounds kind of stange when somebody suddenly talks English ;)

just a sidenote to Eshaktaars post:
If you should want to buy any of the thief games (1,2) and you are able to communicate in german :) (well if you are german i.e.) and you don't know which version to buy (german or english) then don't hesitate to take the german ones. In there you'll find one of the best localization/voice acting efforts you will ever get.
and a short note to my post above:
when I talked about the intro to the first level I meant the first level in THIEF 1....

I don't agree (and I am a German ;)). I put some German and English voice files from Thief II on a website ((
http://www.geocities.com/case6868/thiefsounds.html) if anyone's interested) and in my opinion the German voices aren't nearly as good as the English ones. They lack the amount of temper that gave the English version its unique atmosphere. Many of the voices in the German version were apparently spoken by the same voice actor, but the German actor obviously was no Stephen Russell (and I have the feeling he didn't know the game very well - if at all). That's why many of the voices sound almost the same and lack emotion. The worst of them all is the German voice of Karras (done by a different actor), which has completely lost the high-pitched tongue-swallowing malignity we all loved to hate. The German Garrett doesn't sound as cynical as the English one most of the time. My impression was his voice sometimes had a rather cheerful undertone.
And to make it all worse, they put in a few mistranslations, obviously because they didn't know the storyline of the game (example: In LotP, as Garrett sees Angelwatch he says "....I'll take my tenement any day of the week." In the German version he says "...I'll collect the
tenancy every day")
