(
http://bit.ly/bLIYuo) PC MP Post-Reveal FAQ. It all sounds good to me. (FYI, link may need an age gate cookie before it'll work properly.)
If the max player count is only 18 (9v9), then I'm okay with that. The maps weren't designed for any more than that and with 32 players it'd just turn into a chaotic spamfest like which happened on many CoD4 servers.

Juggernaut and Stopping Power are gone. This puts everyone on the same playing field health and bullet damage wise, but I dunno, maybe they're doing more harm than good here? Will this encourage more people to camp and use more explosives than bullets?

GSPs are awesome, I don't see the big deal. They take away the hassle of you having to:- maintain a server box; keep everything up to date; having to pay a large monthly sum for specific large data cap/high speed/etc ISP plans; etc. See that MP FAQ that I linked to explaining why they chose not to offer public server files.
But Dethtoll, you're not seeing the forest for the trees here. The main point of contention here is that Black Ops dedicated servers worldwide will only be available from THE ONE GSP, Gameservers.com. So there's no options available, no competition so you can't shop around for who offers better deals/services, etc. A monopoly in other words. Plus the queues to buy server space will naturally be longer since there's only one provider.
Also Gameservers.com only has data centres in 9 countries. So your ping will be higher if you don't live in one of those nations.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has no public server files either, but DICE/EA partnered with a wide range of different GSPs, ISPs, etc. companies to offer servers for everyone. It's worked out very well for most people. But unlike with Black Ops, there's options available.

Better rush out and buy it to show your support for this kind of behaviour, imo

You make it sound like the COD games are worth buying just for single player.

Bought CoD4 this year for $20 and got MW2 for free with my comp upgrade. I feel I broke even on the deal. :laff:
Not surprised they are controlling the dedicated servers. Just wish someone would step up and tell us the real thoughts behind the "why" and not this corporate PR bullshit.
Is it piracy? (not likely)
Is it modding? (maybe, they want a consistent product)
Is it being able to shutdown servers to push people into buying the next product? (hmmmmm)
