We haven't had one of these in a while, right?
Just this week a woman in the area was arraigned on charges that in March she murdered her 7-week-old daughter by microwaving her. It's a terrible story, of course.
Leave it to PETA to try to make a deal to put (
http://blogs.sacbee.com/crime/PETA.jpg) this so-bad-it's-good ad up on a billboard. Hooray!
Quote:
Quick to exploit the recent tragedy of a Sacramento infant allegedly killed in a microwave by her mother is PETA.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is negotiating with outdoor advertisers in Sacramento to erect a billboard inspired by the March 17 death of 7-week-old Mirabelle Thao-Lo, according to a news release PETA sent to The Bee.
The billboard features a photo of a person sticking a raw pork chop into a microwave, juxtaposed against a photo of a mother pig and her piglet. Between the two photos is the message "Everybody's Somebody's Baby. Go Vegan."
"The billboard serves to remind people that the vast majority of animals killed for human consumption are just babies who have yet to see their first birthday," the news release states.
Police allege Mirabelle died of thermal burns after her mother, 29-year-old Ka Yang, put her in a microwave. Yang, who police arrested earlier this week, is scheduled to be arraigned today on suspicion of murder and assault resulting in the death of a child under the age of 8.
PETA Founder Ingrid E. Newkirk became a vegetarian after she rescued a baby pig during a farm cruelty case, according to the news release.
"We're horrified at the thought of microwaving a helpless baby and hope that this billboard will open hearts and minds to the grief of other mothers who have their babies torn away from them simply to satisfy humans' fleeting taste sensations," Newkirk is quoted as saying in the news release. "All infants, not just our own, deserve protection, and pigs, like cows and other animals, mourn the loss of their young when they are taken away to be eaten."
PETA's release goes on to say that chickens are typically 7 weeks old - and pigs and turkeys are typically 6 months old - when they are killed on industrialized factory farms. Calves raised for veal often are taken from their mothers within hours of their birth and confined in crates for up to 16 weeks before they are killed.

You do get the feeling that the PETA kids are worried that no one will think they're cool unless they do something SHOCKING every once in a while. The sad part is that no one thinks they're cool regardless, and no one's even really that shocked because this is what we expect from PETA these days.

I have multiple reactions to that picture:
* It makes me hungry.
* What kind of dumbass throws food in the microwave without setting it on a plate or paper towel or something? "I haven't had to clean anything lately, so I think I'll mess up the inside of my microwave."
* What kind of culinary barbarian would cook any cut of meat by microwaving it? Pan broil that sucker or slap it down on a barbecue or something. Jeez.

There's not even any convenience advantage to it. You can get the same speed and ease with a George Foreman grill, which, might I add, is the busy single man's best friend when comes to murder....I mean, meat.

The first thing I thought when I saw the billboard image was "why the hell is that pig photo so low-res?"
I wonder if they actually think they're convincing anyone by being so stupidly insensitive.

*shrugs* They're just in the business of making emotional appeals.
The thing is that animal rights is having a kind of renaissance right now and is taken a lot more seriously than it was 20 years ago, and the whole moral case against all sorts of practices has been built up a lot more robustly. You don't have to pretend it's perpetually the 70s if you want to do something... Unless your objective isn't to do something but just have a cathartic moment of emotional outrage, in which case *shrug*. That's what people do, all the time everywhere. We recognize it for what it is. God hates fags, the mommy piggy misses her baby piggy whose flesh you just torched, and I hate you / will always love you. Cry it out; cry it out.

I heard she was making a curry. She didn't realise that these days, nobody puts baby in a korma.
