I think it was called the Nomad Soul in certain areas. David Bowie did most of the music & even appeared in it.
The art direction in that game was truly remarkable.

I still think original Quake looks fantastic, but again, that's down to a very strong and unique aesthetic.
Similarly, Quake 3 has aged incredibly well, as evidenced by Quake Live. Also, the player models and skins are still some of my favourites ever.
This. Both games have superb architecture and lighting, and something about the consistent aesthetic just "works" in both games. Despite id's well earned reputation for dull monochrome games, Quake 3 has the most vibrant colors and varied palette of any game I know.
While Half-Life 2 isn't really old by any standard, I'd predict that it will hold up as one of the best looking games in the future. Save for the odd low res texture here and there, the game looks almost photo realistic, and you get a definite sense of "place" everywhere in the game. Same with Far Cry 2.

Indeed - the best looking games are generally the ones with strong, consistent art direction, rather than the most technically-proficient graphics.

I'm going to go ahead and agree with this. It's such a shame that PC's absolutely chugged on this game at the time, if there's one game in need of a set of higher poly models and higher resolution textures, this is it.
Somewhere around a year after the game was released (I had played the demo but not bought the game yet) I saw an art book, with a CD of music and movies and art, for Omikron. It was probably about ten dollars. I really, really regret not buying it.
I just heard of
Tyrian this week. I'm not into shmups (though I really, really loved them when I was little), but the game's art is really well-thought out, tight, and lovely. It's one of the most fully realized shooters I've seen, with a little upgrade system, cool intermediate screens, and a silly little plot. It has a great, bronzey look.

Used to love Tyrian. The soundtrack was great, too.

what i really like was Mechwarrior 3, though no having the best resolution i liked the details, like the debris laying around after something blew up or the actual damage in the armor of a mech that you can see. realy neat where the cracks in the glass of the cocpit when one got hit...
i often miss these details in newer games
